If we sign him 5+ we should come down on our price a little. but 7 years would be epic.

One thing people tend to forget about Williams and Stewart: Not only are they both elite backs, they work extremely well together. I could count on one hand the number of top notch backs in the NFL that could share time without grumbling or (seemingly) a shread of regret. We happen to have two of them.

Keeping them together is one of the most important things the FO can do.

The fact that they are (allegedly) seeking to extend D-Will bodes well for the possibility of us keeping both RB's long-term. If we were only going to keep one of them, it would make more sense to keep J-Stew--he's younger, hasn't missed a game in his career, and he seems be more of a "workhorse"-type back. I won't be surprised at all if both of them are Panthers for the next 4+ years.

Give DWill the extension but I think we need to trade Stewart. We could get a 1st rounder this year (which we don't have) or have an extra first rounder next year. We need desperate help on the D-Line, I don't think it wise to tie up 90+ million dollars for two RB on the same team. Don't get me wrong I would love to keep two top 10 RB on the same team but we need help elsewhere.

If this comes to fruition it will indeed show that the FO is working toward the future and not just the short term. As was mentioned, if we take Pepper's money we aren't spending and give Williams a contract that is front loaded on the guaranteed money and backloaded on salary we can have a contract which won't create a big cap hit over the next several seasons. Once Williams turns 30, if he declines we can let him go with little consequence. In the end if he gets Jackson money it is only 7 million a year on average and Jackson will likely not see the last 3 years of it. Still we could pay Williams and Stewart 7 million a year each just on what we saved on Pepper's alone.

For those who don't want a 7 or 8 year deal, why worry? The only part we have to pay is the guaranteed amount which is typically the signing bonus. It is like Pepper's contract and Hayneworth contract, it may be on paper for 90 or 100 million but those players won't see half of the money. We could give Williams a 8 year contract without being stuck for more than 3 or 4 years especially if it was front loaded so there would be little cap consequences because there would be little to no money which would accelerate if we cut him before the end of the contract. Plus we can always put in roster bonuses in years 6 or 7 which look great on paper but are rarely paid like in Kemo's and Lewis's cases.

Jerry has always wanted to build thru the draft and keep core players long term. I consider stewart and d-will both essential to each other's success. If they like to co-exist in the manner they currently do, then they both should realize the amount they need each other. they both have low miles and should be productive for another 4-6 yrs. i hope these moves are an effort to structure the deals for each of them to keep the tandem in place for years to come.

face it, they are the identity of this team. we are a power running team, and two great backs are essential to this scheme.

lets hope this is a sign of things to come. davis is next...

Isn't DWill still on his rookie contract too? He deserves an extension and hasn't said a damn word about it, no complaining no skipping workouts.. about as classy as you can get right there.

      They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.

      I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).

      It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
