Think they are clearly factoring in Canales' TE usage last year in their evaluation. 

The TEs in Tampa caught less balls and had less yardage than the Panthers TEs last year.  And the TEs last year sucked here.   

It's really hard to guess what the plan for this O will be next year.  All we have really heard is the coach saying we want to run the ball (despite them being bad at that in Tampa last year).

i'm hoping that the fact they have met with at least Wiley means that they are looking in that direction.

they could have other plans, though. maybe it's just they are looking at him as a tall pass catcher.

really looking forward to preseason, I hope Canales is going to be bringing a fresh offensive take to Carolina that doesn't look like Tampa on repeat.  I think we need to be doing some different things given our QB and WR setup.

  • Tremble, 194 yards, 3 TDs (no drops) Caught 72% of targets.  (This is something to build on)
  • Hurst (Now a Charger, I think) 184 yards, 1 TD, (2 drops) Caught 56% of targets.
  • Sullivan 125 yards, 0 TDs, (1 drop) Caught 50% of targets.
  • Thomas 56 yards, 0 TDs, (1 drop) Caught 56% of targets.

I see Tremble showing signs of breaking out in a new system.  The others are trash.

i think i heard something about thomas being a good blocker.

he might be, but you wouldn't know.

keep tremble...churn the rest of the group. draft 2 WRs and 2 TEs and a center and call it a weekend.

Nothing in this that we could not have collectively written.  I am guessing that we will take advantage of our place in the waiver wire line to sign a practice squad QB.  " The new rules allow teams to carry a third quarterback on game day, who can be activated from the practice squad. It's an interesting wrinkle since few teams were interested in carrying three on their active rosters. That makes it seem like a spot for a late-round pick. But Canales has said he would prefer to have a veteran in that role to offer more perspective in meetings and on the practice field. It's not inconceivable if a mid-round quarterback slides that they could take him late, but it still seems more likely they'd have an older player in that role."

I would love to see us sign C Connor Williams.  Not sure how a guy like that is still unsigned, but on the surface, that would help solidify the OL so that we can ignore it. 

based on this article, I am speculating our needs to be (I realize this did not discuss Defense, but those needs are depth at this point)

1. CB  (Believe it or not, the Corner position is thinner than WR right now in my view.  We have a 32-year old nickel, an alpha who has been on IR more than the field, and a former seventh-round pick who is new here.  I think we should draft a CB early and maybe take one off the waiver wire later).

2. WR (We need playmakers--a large X would be nice, but I think the focus in on YAC and not deep speed.  We will draft 2)

3. LB  (We have very little depth behind our two 30-year old ILBs.  We have to take one by the end of round 3, imo, or we miss out.)

4. C  (unless we sign Connor Williams, we need a C later in the draft).

5.  RB (we need a bruiser, preferably one who can block and has hands)

6. TE (Looks like Tremble is going to be the guy--and I saw enough to be OK with that since this TE draft class is weak).

 

That is it.  We have other needs, but they will have to wait.  Am I happy with Wonnum and Clowney?  I suppose.  Am I happy with our DTs and DEs?  I guess.  TE?  Nope.

Having the #1 seat at the waiver wire table could be huge if a team reluctantly has to cut a decent player. 

it's darin gantt. i've got mixed feelings about him.

i would like to see us draft and then pick up a vet TE. that would be pretty ideal. we need to get at least one more, though.

I would not judge the offense by how it looks in preseason.  It will be vanilla.  Having said that, last preseason definitely was a foreshadowing of things to come.  So who knows.

preseason looks always show some basic and core building blocks to an offense.  Especially a new one you are installing.   You can't really make up fake offense given you are trying to teach everyone the new one.

      Then don't tune in. It's really not a hard concept to understand, if your making your decision based on your own personal needs/feelings as opposed to what is best for the future of the franchise, then it's a you problem, not a Panthers problem. When the season is already lost, every fan should be rooting for the same thing.  The team plays hard until the final whistle of the season and keeps improving as a team and individually, but in the end, we still come up short and lose games, and preferably because the other team beat us, not because we screwed up and found a way to lose due to our own fault. Look at it this way... If we are up 1 or 2 points with 3 seconds left in the game and the other team is lining up for a FG.  Beyond the joy of victory or the disappointment of defeat, what impact does the other team making or missing the FG have on our team the following season? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING Except where we draft and what teams we play due to our finish in the division. The players and coaches on the team would have the exact same level of improvement and learnings about themselves individually and as a team whether the FG is made or missed.  The ONLY difference in the end is the record in the standings and if the win or loss number changes. If you want to argue if making the playoffs to lose in the first round or just missing them is better or worse, that's totally fair and I can at least understand the other side of it.  But in what is already a lost season, if you're not hoping your team plays well but ends up losing, then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.  You're hoping for a moment of happiness at the detriment of the franchise's future, and in turn, you're basically then happy for a moment to only set yourself up for future further disappointment.

      If we’re eliminated I want the wins more.   The season is already a disappointment and if I’m not pulling for wins why bother to tune in?

      Two things terribly wrong with this post. First is that not one time has myself or anyone else agreeing with me said that the team themselves should think that way or try and lose for positioning.  Never once have I suggested the team should purposefully lose games, ever.  I honestly can't understand why people keep saying this in posts, not one fan has ever said the players should or would purposefully try to lose. And second, is yes, that has happened and it's happened very recently.  The 2020 Bengals were 4-11-1 and then were playing in the SB the very next season.   And while it might have been 2 years later and they didn't quite get to the SB, the 2021 Lions were 3-13-1 and then the 2023 Lions were up 24-7 at halftime of the NFC Championship game. The season between those two? They finished 9-8 and only just missed the playoffs. Which is why I keep trying to compare us to the Lions in where we are at in our re-build.  Throw out Bryce's rookie year with the Reich staff who just didn't work out and he looked god awful.   This past season when we were 5-12 in Canales' 1st season is that 2021 season for the Lions and their 1st season under Campbell.  This year is their 2022 where they grew a ton and Campbell's culture building was clear, where I'm saying we'd likely be better off in the long run if we go 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss out on the playoffs (which is still a significant improvement from last year).  Then our 2026 is their 2024 when we have a chance to be a real contender after adding a few more pieces and our key players having another year of experience under their belts.
