Browns apparently were interested in Richard Marshall...

Still though, what are we going to do, let him rot behind Godfrey?

We have two great young FS on the roster...

I'm not sold on Godfrey or Martin at FS just yet. One will come out ahead after TC and the other will back up and play in ST and dime situations.

A good backup/ST'er/situational player is better that a nickle CB out of his depth for a year or two.

I'd rather not ruin Martin by flopping him back to CB. He was wholy unimpressive there.

Yet he was still significantly above Captain in the CB depth chart (entering the game AT LEAST a whole quarter before CM did) prior to him being forced to move to Safety due to the number of injuries at the position along with Wesley's failure when asked to fill in...then got hurt himself on ST in the first half of his first game where he was supposed to play Safety.

I've heard the myth that he was not very good at CB repeated several times on this site, but that is not accurate at all. Sure, he didn't make any big plays and was clearly still figuring the position out, but he also didn't give up any big plays either, despite what some will try to make you believe. I actually paid particular attention to him every time he was on the field. In fact, I actually watched pretty much every play he was involved with on replay, in slow motion. And the truth is that he was quite solid, not spectacular, but solid.

The only catches he gave up were short underneath routes where he was right there with the receiver. One humorous thing I did find, was that while a handful of posters tried quite vocally to blame Martin for a couple of big plays that were given up by our backup secondary, none of those plays, in fact, were actually given up by Martin. On one particular play, for example, he got lambasted by a couple of guys here for badly blowing his coverage, the only problem was that Martin wasn't even on the field when the play happened. IMO, I believe most of the negative feedback was coming from either those that didn't like his pick or Captain fans that were excited that he was getting praised as being a steal for a 7th rounder and saw Martin as his competition for playing time.

My point is that I think Martin may be a much better CB than a lot of people here are giving him credit for...not that he's ready to step in as starter right now, but the potential may be there. And with how much better Godfrey played once he came back from his injury, along with the fact that Fox seems to like him back there, I fully expect Martin to be moved back to CB this year. From everything I have heard, they are high on Martin, and will want to get him on the field, which probably won't happen any time soon at Safety.

I don't think that the Panthers want to trade Marshall, they were just being cheap and hoping that no one picked him up.

I don't think they are as high on Marshall as some think. Despite poison pills not being in vogue right now, they are not illegal either. So, the fact that they put the 2nd round tender on him instead of the first indicates to me that they probably wouldn't cry if they lose Marshall. Otherwise, they wouldn't risk some team getting creative and coming up with a deal that would be almost impossible to match.

I thought they moved Martin back to corner after Godfrey got healthy last year. There has been speculation (or knowledge given) by Harris that Martin is in competition with Godfrey and if any player would know, he would, but I was convinced at the end last year the coaches/Hurney were going to be hardheaded about keeping Martin at corner. Because players like Harris interact with the media so much, this staff may not have told them what they are really doing.

I think the truth is that Hurney likes the ability of Martin to play both CB and FS. This gives him flexibility on draft day and in the FA market up until camp starts, even after. Remember Davis and all the flip flopping? I hope it doesn't happen to that extent, but the possibility is there. That's my 2 cents. You know, big boy Madden with real life rules and consequences.

Meh. Marshall is a solid #2 CB, and is only getting better. I don't believe the Panthers have any interest in trading him, I think they put the tag on him to let other teams send in offers to give him a reality check of what he's worth.

I'd rather keep our #4 ranked secondary in place, it's the only group of guys left who have solid experience playing with each other. just my 2 cents.

Exactly. Marshall is a solid corner who acted like he wanted the biggest deal ever. Panthers took a gamble and showed him he isn't worth as much as he thinks. Good move. Wouldn't want to trade him at all.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
