(By Darin Gantt, [email protected]) Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason knows he might have to wait a little longer for his payday. But after reading the news the past few days, he also has a better idea of what's headed his way when that day finally comes.p/Beason said Wednesday he was well aware of the six-year, $48million deal signed by Houston middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans on Tuesday, a deal that included $21.75million guaranteed.

For somebody like Beason why dont they sign him up now and give him the big signing bonus now in 2010. I know about the CBA issues and the team is being tight with the possibiliy of a lockout, but doesnt it make sense to give the money now and when a cap is reinstated what you pay players in 2010 wont count against it. I am sure Hurney understand this much more than me, but why not for a player like Beason.

Signing him up now would mean we would have to give him another extension in around 4 years. It's just good business to get as much out of the rookie contracts as possible, as well as minimising the amount of extensions you give one player.

That makes sense and I hear ya on that. This appears to be a unique situation with the CBA issue and no cap that I just wonder why a team wouldnt want to consider front loading a deal to avoid a big cap hit when you would have to sign a guy like Beason. But I can see a team sticking with the small contract and dealing with the cap when they have to.

I could be wrong, but isn't there some sort of rule that guards against extending players in that manor? I think it's specifically for the uncapped year. Something to do with the % increase from one year to the next.

Giving him a 4 year extension now would mean you dont have to do anything until after 2015 when he is 30 years old and on the downside of his career. It would also be 6 years away not 4. You wouldn't void his current contract but you would do what we did with Smith, extend his current agreement and pay him a big signing bonus.

We aren't going to do it because we aren't focused on the long-term but saving as much money now with the CBA looming. Until we stop going on the cheap and open the pursestrings once the CBA and lockout get resolved, there won't be any big signings or extensions.

There is a rule which says his salary can't increase more than 30% from one year to the next. But there is a difference between salary and cap hit. Everyone get paid the guaranteed signing bonus when they actually sign the contract. But it is usually spread out over the life of the contract which accounts for the cap hit. Without the cap hit this year you can pay him the money up front and take the cap hit now instead of spreading it out. Plus there are lots of ways to count things as salary which aren't guaranteed like roster bonuses and lump sum payments like we did with Kemo amd Lewis which aren't expected to get exercised.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
