correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't matt moore behind josh mccown in the depth chart last year? has there ever been another time a quarterback has went from the 3rd string to starter in one year and had success? i'm not well versed in nfl history.

i could see how a qb could be promoted like that if the 2nd string qb was really old and about to retire anyway, but mccown was relatively young. if moore is really as good as we all hope, how could he have been overlooked by our coaches? if he has a lot of success this year, i think this would be the biggest oversight since steve smith was on the bench in 2001.

Fox did not like him. Not him as in the player in him, but the person. In this ball club you need both. Moore owns McCown, if we are talking player wise, but Mccown might have more values. Also Fox theory is horrible with qbs, mccown had experience moore didn't, that alone put him at #3 in Fox's program.

well, he was also undrafted and cut from cowboys roster. does he have some kind of major personal issues which i am totally unaware of? i don't really need to know what they are. a "yes" or "no" would suffice.

It wasn't Fox didn't like him, it wasn't personality at all. Fox was reported by others to have said that Moore was not a football guy, in other words questioned his committment and work ethic.

Plus the OP was mistaken. When McCown was put on IR at the beginning of the season, Moore was listed second on the depth chart. Feeley was listed as third most of the year.

Has it happened before? Wasn't Flacco listed as number 3 in 2008 for Balitimore but started due to injuries to the other 2 guys?? He has done pretty well. I am sure there have been others.

Either way that's the problem with Fox. Trying to figure out if Matt is this or that, questioning his work ethics, all the while just too busy doing all this to realize he is winning games. Looking more at the person and not so much at the numbers is what it seem to come down to.

They didn't cut him -- they tried to keep him on the practice squad and we claimed him off waivers.

I remember his teammates praising Moore back in 2007 for his ability to lead the team and his poise under pressure. I sincerely think Fox's refusal to start Moore has more to do with his allegiance to Delhomme (and vets in general) than it did any character issues Moore might have.

He's just a laid-back California kid... that personality doesn't mesh well with John Fox.

Laid back and slack are not even close. Peyton Manning is said to be laid back but his work ethic is legendary. That was an excuse made up on this message board to blame Fox for Moore's poor work ethic last year. Something Moore has apparently been working hard to correct this year from reports.

not really true.

he was undrafted, yes, but the cowboys had 3 QBs but only wanted 2 on the 53 man roster...tony romo (starter), and brad johnson (cagey old vet who could step in if romo went down). they tried sneaking moore on the practice squad but panthers nabbed him. only thing that moore had going against him was experience.

I disagree. It is up to the player to show the coach what he can do and that he is prepared to take over. That means showing up and giving 100%, spending extra time in the film room and being a leader every minute of the day not just on the field. Moore seems to be the exception in that he is a gamer but it not true with most guys. And even guys like Moore will find out that they will have to work even harder this year to avoid a sophomore slump after teams have plenty of game tape on him. He had no excuse given what he is being paid to not give 110%.

I would never advocate laziness, no matter how far buried on the depth chart a player is.

With that said, I imagine Moore wouldn't be very motivated to work hard knowing that no matter how hard he worked and no matter how poorly Delhomme played, he'd never take over the starting job. Hell, it was only by injury that Moore got out there in the first place.

I think Moore felt validated by the nice salary and the starting position this year, and I think he'll prepare very differently knowing he is the unquestioned leader of this team.

From all indications I think you are right. The Panthers have done everything to set the table for Moore including getting rid of Jake. I think he will do everything in his power to work hard and produce this year.

ya, flacco, but he was a rookie. i can understand why a rookie is buried in the depth chart. i didn't know about moore's previous lack of commitment though.

Who is Matt Moore from a character standpoint? I don't live in Charlotte and have only seen one interview with Moore. Is he a standup guy that my six year old son can look up to and proudly wear his jersey the way he wore #17? Is Moore a family guy? Is he involved in the community? How does he treat the fans?

I'm not saying he is of high character or that he is not. I really don't know, but would like to hear what the general opinion is of him in the Charlotte area.

    • I would say that he's pulling things out of his ass to get people to visit his site.
    • Yep. I was hoping for and calling for a day three guy. But I didn’t research the position to say if we should or should‘t have jumped at a particular guy at a particular spot.    And everything I read said it was a poor draft for RBs depth wise. I guess when Seattle takes a backup RB in the 1st, that kind of backs that up.    I definitely think we should keep 4 running backs and if King can play well enough then keep him too.    I believe I heard Canales say we are a running team (talking about drafting a WR he will be needing to block as well as catch). Well if we are gonna be a running team by identity we don’t need to stock the WR room to overflowing. If one room has to sacrifice, it should not be the RB room given our circumstances.
    • If there's a pattern I'm definitely picking up from Dan and company is a philosophy of making trades where we try not to sacrifice the number of draft picks we have by day's end. In other words, we're not giving up three picks for one, or giving up a future pick to make a pick today. And even if we give up something at the start, we make trades later to make up for that initial loss. Here's how it stacked up for 2026: How we started: 19, 51, 83, 119, 158, 159, 200 How we ended: 19, 49, 83, 129, 144, 151, 227 (no future picks sacrificed) Ultimately, we moved up two spots in the second to ensure we got someone we coveted, gave up a few spots for our fourth round pick, but then had better picks in the 5th (and got really good value out of them), and had a worse 7th rounder which isn't that big of a loss anyways.  At this point, we can question who they draft, but they're pretty good maneuvering across the draft board.
