Panthers thin, so quarterback seems inevitable

(By Charles Chandler, [email protected]) With the opening of the NFL draft eight days away, the Carolina Panthers have fewer games started by quarterbacks on their roster than any other team - and it's not close.p/Matt Moore has eight starts and the only other quarterback under contract, Hunter Cantwell, hasn't taken a snap during a regular-season game.

Moore is more entrenched in his position then Strafford or Sanchez. He has played well and needs a backup not competition. After Fox and Hurney handed the keys to the car. They need to let him drive it. That is why we should pursue Bulger. He would know coming in he is the backup and could give Moore some veteran guidance. Moore wouldn't having to check over his shoulder like he would with Campbell.

We're not signing anyone until after the draft, then we'll get our back up. There's going to be guys released after the draft anyway.

No point in signing or trading for anyone now till before OTAs, if we draft a QB it's a faller with one of our last 4 picks in the bottom two rounds.

Panthers have two picks in the top 100, that's good enough to get serviceable talent at WR and DL in this draft. going elsewhere is rediculous.

Don't understand the premise of this article, how is drafting a QB going to make up for our lack of starting experience at that position?

We may take a QB in the draft, but I have a really hard time believing we won't sign some sort of veteran FA QB as a backup.

Why does everyone want to coddle moore? how can they complain about delhomme not having competition then dont want any for moore? if he is as good as you guys think he is then he should beat out anyone we bring in. you guys want competitiion for all the other spots on the team and say the young guys should step up but then dont want that to happen at the qb spot.

they dont have to draft some one majorly jigh just someone with potential. that could work out for us in two ways. we always have a qb to experiment on the roster and say he does good for a while if moore gets injured then after a while he can be trade bait similiar to a eagles situation.

I agree. I don't see anybody's logic that we shouldn't bring in competition, they would be stupid not to. If Moore is as great as he is (which I have no doubt that he will be a hell of a lot better then Delhomme) then he should have no issue beating out a rookie or anyone that they bring in. That said, Hunter Cantwell is the only other QB on the roster and that isn't a knack on Cantwell but normally we go into camp with 4 QBs, with 1 going on the practice squad. Cantwell might be the 4th QB, Moore obviously being the #1 QB, but who will the other two spots belong to?

Simple. We will draft a QB, most likely 3rd or 4th round, and then re-sign McCown or sign another low end vet to take his place. McCown and rookie will battle for the #2 spot and possibly challenge Moore with Moore overall winning.

we'll draft someone (not necessarily early) and then bring in a vet. i seriously doubt that we will go with just 2 QBs on the 53 man roster plus they will need someone for the PS (cantwell, who is a pretty good long term project himself).

i'm not too worried about the QB situation at all. there will be a few more QBs to choose from post-draft. mccown is the fall back plan (and not too bad of one at that).

i'm much more concerned with who we get at WR, DE, DT and who will be returning kicks and punts.

I'm not worried about a return man. Our coverage was so terrible that Cribbs wouldn't be able to do anything for us last year. Looks like they're adding some good players which might open up more holes for our current returners to do some damage.

i am seriously concerned about wr. does any know of any wr that possibly might be available after the draft? any on the brink? there are none that come to mind that would be a viable # 2 which is scary!. we essentially have to hit homeruns on this entire draft.

Granted Moore will be named the starter, but how about if he doesn't play well or happens to get injured? Cantwell? You can't be serious. I admire the loyalty to the team that many of you have, but reality trumps loyalty and says we need a legit plan 'B' if Moore's stretch run last year was just an aberration or has an injury that requires him to miss multiple games.

I'm not saying we need to bring in some huge name or someone that will require a lofty salary, but someone that can come in and get a few wins if called upon. A rookie won't work either; it's a non-starter for a serious back up. Cantwell would be just as good.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
