Atogwe to become UFA...

NFL Network's Steve Wyche reports that restricted free agent FS O.J. Atogwe will not sign his tender with the Rams, meaning he'll become an unrestricted free agent on June 1.

The Rams still hold exclusive negotiating rights with Atogwe until that point, but it appears he won't budge and is poised to leave St. Louis. Though Atogwe is coming off reconstructive shoulder surgery and a reported sports hernia, he will have plenty of suitors on the open market. The Rams do intend to meet with Atogwe this month, perhaps to make a long-term offer.

I think Rotoworld misunderstood how it works.

Pretty sure he doesn't become a UFA unless they relinquish his rights.

This article was in relationship to the Redskins players not signing their tenders but it suggests that if they don't sign by June 15th, they either can't play in 2010 or risk having their tender offer lowered to 110% of their 2009 salary. No where does it say they can be UFAs until after the season.

That jibes with my understanding.

If it were possible to become a UFA by just not signing until a certain date, Peppers could have done that last year.

Second screwup this week by an NBC affiliated website.

(that first one was a doozy though)

They didn't franchise him this year, did they?

If I remember right, they franchised him last year, but gave him the low tender this year.

Atogwe? No. But I remembered hearing about the 110% kickin, cause it was discussed as something we could've done re: Sproles, but someone would've jumped on that like white on rice - so we went 1/3 RFA. Since Atogwe still has the injuries, STL went that route, since action on him wouldn't be that strong.

I was never sure if he was really as good as they thought he was.

    • He does have speed. 21+ top end speed is very fast for a linebacker and his 3 cone drill time is considered excellent, close to elite.
    • This is awesome because you get to see the perspectives of the scouts--get a glimpse behind the curtain. I wonder whose doing this was; I am curious as to why David Tepper allowed it. Maybe it was his wife. Maybe Dan.  At least from my perspective--and probably one shared by other fans--when David Tepper bought the team, he closed everything off too much to the fans, and really didn't give an explanation. Things were obviously done because he (and/or some others wanted to do it). Remember when they used the guise of construction and all that to keep fans from seeing the team during practice? I know there are laws and safety and all that, but Tepper could've made it happen. And, of course, we all know that they essentially fired Jeremy from his independent contractor gig as a photojournalist. I never understood why they'd do that (and the negative reverberations obviously affected Jeremy and ultimately this place--i.e, us fans). The pie was (and is) certainly big enough to throw some scraps to the independents. I realize that you can't necessarily open the floodgates, but a few different perspectives from indy journalists whether in word or photos is a good thing in my mind.  So, it's great to see different perspectives. I will say this however: it is not without risk, as you know there will be some buster who will be calling the scouts out if the players flop. I think we should all keep in mind that the buck stops with the GM. It's nice to have one, however, that is so convicted in his people and process--and ultimately success, that he's willing to give fans access to this type of information. Pass this on to Tepper.
    • I hope he ends up being our best ever at the position. Ryan Kalil left big shoes behind that we haven't quite been able to fill since.
