What's Matt Moore's ceiling?

I'm not disputing that but saying it doesn't matter at all like the original poster was saying isn't true either. I should probably say talent/ability over physical as that's not quite what I meant. I was just trying to emphasize the technical parts of the game over mental. Russel was more potential and measurables than being technically sound. He was going to need a lot of coaching to reach his potential.

Clausen throws a very nice ball, that counts for something. It's not the most important aspect of who you would want to start but that could tip the scales in a close competition.

All things being equal obviously finding someone with great mechanics has to be an advantage. But it is probably rated 3rd of 4th behind, being coachable, being intelligent and having great intangibles. Look at a guy like The Golden Calf of Bristol, he surely didn't sneak into the first round on his mechanics. Josh McDaniels who knows quarterbacks felt that what he brought to the table far outweighed his throwing limitations.

Russell had great physical skills. He could throw a ball 50 yards on his knees and could run as well (when he was below 300 lbs). His problem was poor work ethic, poor leadership skills and not pushing away from the table.

my issue with matt moore is that the comments about him are "not bad", "pretty good", "didn't lose the game", etc.

Almost by definition, the best assets a quarterback can have are a great line and a great running game. When you have both and you are not putting together a top ten or fifteen passing game you can see why Moore is not getting a lot of respect. With a guy like Clausen on the team now, expectations for Moore should be very high. He's been in the league a while, he knows the playbook, and he has a solid offense.

He had a passer rating of 104.9 during his 5 games which was 2nd behind Phillip Rivers, so I don't understand why he is getting a lot of respect. When I see how much respect Kolb gets for having a far less impressive resume I understand even less.

I was listening to an interview on Sirius NFL today with Brees and that is not what he said. He said the key to success for him was finding passing lanes to throw the ball and trusting his guys to be where they are supposed to be. He admits to not having a big arm or great mechanics but said that being able to feel pressure and move around until he can find someone open is the key to his success. He said that having a compact motion and quick release to get the ball out quickly was important as well.

That what what he was just sayin..................

Once he finds those passing lanes what does he do with the ball?

The answer is he throws the ball.:D

The question was does he have great physical skills and is that the key to his success and it isn't. He is saying what I said, it is what is between the ears thats matter the most. Any quarterback who makes it to the pros can throw the ball.

We are talking football players here. Not exactly Phi Beta Kappa material across the board. LOL

Other than a few guys who go to Stanford, the Ivy league, Duke, etc. not exactly mental giants. Most athletes get into their respective schools with lower grades and SAT scores than the population in general. I suspect basketball is the lowest but football can't be that much higher.

True.

I think if the panthers feel this way about Clausen then even if Matt Moore has a good year he still could be let go because of Clausen.

This season is a test of Moore. If Moore proves to the Panthers that he's a good NFL starting QB, and can stay healthy for the whole season, the Panthers will pay him, they just want to be sure before they pay starting QB money long term. The only way the Panthers let Moore leave is if he can't play well enough to hold onto the starting job, or is injured, and Clausen plays better when he comes in.

When an expected top 10 QB pick falls to #48 like Clausen did, and your team doesn't have a solid veteran starting QB, you have to take him. Drafting 2 rookie QB's is very unusual, but the Packers did it in 08 when they were in the same situation. I just hope the Panthers picks of Clausen, and Pike work out better than the Packers picks of Brohm, and Flynn have. Wouldn't it be great if Moore were to become as good a QB as Rogers?

If Moore lights it up and takes us to the playoffs, I think you might be right and we will pay Moore. But if Clausen plays well in preseason and Moore isn't outstanding, then we very well might let him go. We didn't draft Clausen to remain the backup forever and it isn't like Green Bay with Rodgers where Favre was old and ready to retire. Moore is young and has 10 years ahead of him. We are not likely to keep both of them and with Clausen making 1 or 2 million a year and Moore wanting 7 or 8 on a long term deal, it will be very easy to sign and trade him. With Richardson playing the pinching pennies game, it is more likely to happen this year than it would have been in the past when Richardson was known to spend more freely.

Maybe. But think of all the players we have to re-sign.If the panthers feel Clausen could do it then maybe we let Moore go.Even if he plays well.

Don't forget, they have invested more than money in Matt Moore...they have invested 3 years of their time training him too. He will have to really suck it up for them to let him go anywhere, IMO.

With all the vets they let go and what I think will be several guys not signed after this year, it doesn't appear that they care as much about how much they have invested in their players, as who is the cheapest guy who can do the job.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
