The Other Steve Smith wants "Greg Jennings-type money"

Steve Smith would like a new contract, but he's not going to hold out of training camp to get it. Smith is scheduled to make just $550,000 in the final year of his rookie contract. That's a pretty modest salary considering he easily broke the franchise's single-season record for receptions last year with 107. The Giants would like to give Smith an extension, but the timing is poor because of the "30 percent" rule. Smith believes he deserves Greg Jennings money (four years, $26.8 million), but he's less proven -- especially as a playmaker -- than Jennings was at the time of his extension

For those CBA pundits, exactly how are teams going to get around the 30% rule by waiting when players will be free agents in February and it is very unlikely that any new CBA will be done before then. All of these guys will be free agents which means they will be free to negotiate with anyone and from what I read since they will be working on a new contract, the 30% rule won't apply if they go elsewhere. The 30% rule only applies if they get an extension from their current team before free agency begins. It seems to me teams will either be faced with ponying up the money then in signing bonuses, being creative as they could already or letting some other team sign them away for no compensation.

What am I missing here?????

He should play out his contract, and then he can get the contract he thinks he deserves. As of right now, he hasn't earned it.

I think he has, the amount he's earning vs his production is a pittance, that being said he'll be looked after by the Giants, they're a class organisation and won't allow good players to walk for financial reasons.

Smith has the potential to be a better Wes Welker type receiver and should be on more money.

It's a tough issue. He's 25, no injury history to speak of and the giants have a history as I mentioned of being a class organisation. I don't blame him, but he's not making a necessarily smart move either.

That FA is likely going to be flooded with talent after this season. Why work around the system when you can just wait and pick up virtually any position you want.

Teams can also use one franchise tag and two transition tags, effectively extending 'negotiating' ability beyond free agency. It's a tricky situation, so you need to tag the right people. In theory we can use these to increase the chance of keeping Williams, Kalil & one of Moore and Davis.

I am apprehensive about giving Davis a whopping contract which his talent deserves, simply because there is no guarantee what sort of impact this second injury will have on his mental state or physical state. Beyond that we only have Johnson, King our DTs, Marshall & Williams/Anderson up for free agency of any significance. With little chance of keeping Marshall, two 'better' receiving TEs, Everette Brown & question marks over the DTs you can see there we could easily extend some of the second tier players, yet no have too many problems come free agency

There really are not many teams breaking their backs to extend their young players.

    • Little light hearted topic.. For whatever reason Cam Newton doesn't appear in Madden ultimate team every year for whatever reason like most legends. I personally believe it's due to them robbing him of appearing on the cover of the video game series during his peak years winning NFL rookie of the year and the MVP super bowl run.  Needless to say I'm a huge Competitive Madden ultimate team player spending hours of days crunching numbers and churning roster management. When this was announced it was a lightening rod in the Madden community. Competitive players know Newton is a game changer.. Your talking fastest quarterback in the game and highest throwing power in the game when he drops. That a long with. Unheard of ability at quarterback like freight train the ability to run over linebacker and corners and I was stoked. I m ashamed to say how much money threw at the game to try to pull newton and failed  But it's a big deal seeing as every pro Madden player most certainly has to have him on their roster and the card art is pretty sweet.
    • A few different ways this can be taken depending on how you view things: Negative: This coaching staff is so inept that players are having to practically beg them to put them in situations that we as fans have been screaming for. How could David Tepper and Bryce Young do this to us? Positive: The coaches are listening to the players who are trusting the coaches! Neutral: Collaboration can lead to good things, so hopefully this starts the upward trend we've been waiting for.
    • I've been trying to tell y'all since preseason that Brycen Tremayne is the missing piece. 😛 XL, TMac, Coker, and Tremayne all dumpstering DBs when the team runs out of 10 personnel will be hilarious.
