Peter King: Panthers Postcard

The hands of Brandon LaFell. I don't know he 'LaFell' to the third round of the draft, but he made one terrific catch and another couple of nabs in traffic that were big-time. I would be surprised if by the end of the year we don't see LaFell making big catches down the field for Carolina. Coaches love him.

Lunch entrée: In keeping with my healthy camp habits (don't worry, they won't last), I threw together a good summer salad -- iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumbers, grape tomatoes -- with balsamic vinaigrette, and a scoop of chicken salad on the side. Excellent chicken salad. Just OK lettuce.

Drink: Dasani water.

Grade: C-plus.

Yeah... he always seems to have those little vignettes that everyone else couldn't care less about. I think it's part of his schtick for the whole postcard format. In the end, it was nice to see a national pundit actually get what he said factually straight before submitting it for publication rather than sling poo at a wall and then read the resultant corn nuts to divine what it all means.

You don't get any sense that John Fox is coaching, behaving or feeling like a lame duck. He's in the last year of his contract, and it's clear that if he wants top-eight NFL coaches' money (which he does), he's not going to get it in Carolina. I expect Fox to be elsewhere next year, but I don't expect it will be a factor with his team this year, because Fox isn't going to air it publicly and his players don't seem to notice.

Well unless Fox has a "standout" year this season, it's hard to imagine he'll get "top-eight" money elsewhere.

Excellent points and I get your "nuggets" theory, quite right! It also got me to thinking about Moore. When he got the train out of reverse last season, he started showing a high level enthusiasm, kinda like Jake did when he finished 2003 after that halftime against J'ville. If Moore can get his "right stuff" going in RS at the outset, he's is gonna be as good or hopefully better than Jake in the close of 2010. THEN he'll get more "holler" in his approach. You probably remember those hand pumps Moore gestured when he nailed Jersey's coffin...a taste of ol' Jake's enthsiasm I loved.

    • I have been looking for a dropped pass list and all that comes up is QBs. And team stats. When I do receivers I get the passing stats for a handful that threw passes this year.    I wanted to be accurate but anyhow I was looking because thought I remembered reading where T Mac had more drops than XL this year.  One of you many smarter than me people here,I would appreciate it if you know how to pull that up, please do. Thank you.    And yeah I know that isn’t all there is to it I just thought it was interesting.  Of course what the hell is a drop lol.
    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
