UFC 117: Anderson Silva

One of the most classic fights in MMA history and one of the best comebacks in sports history. PERIOD. I saw the opportunity for a triangle about 1 minute before he went to it. I'm no Anderson Silva, so I assume he couldn't get to it when I initially saw the opening for it. But man, once he cranked it, there is no way anybody in that weight class is getting out of it. AMAZING fight.

Great fight but wish Sonnen had won it. He backed up his talk more than I ever thought he would and looked like he was on a mission. Silva reminds me of a Julius Peppers, he can do great things when he trys and is an athletic freak but doesn't have the heart to go for it all the time. When Silva fights he is great but I don't enjoy watching him prance around and act like a jackass the other 90% of the time.

I would hope for a rematch after that though and not 3 years down the road. I don't know what the UFC is doing with the heavyweights giving Cain Velasquez a shot at Lesnar then Dos Santos, give me a break. Should have been Carwin Lesnar 2 right around Christmas or New Years, now who knows when those two will fight again.

Great event all around tonight though, all the fights were awesome.

funny thing, i never started to worry until just a few seconds before Silva won. once i saw in the first round that Sonnen didn't have the punching power to actually end the fight, i knew that Silva would just bide his time until he saw an opening.

when Silva slipped and went down in the 5th i assumed it was over. then he rocked Sonnen from his back, got him to start defending instead of attacking, and slapped on a triangle. freaking incredible.

immediate rematches are for controversial judges decisions like Shogun/Machida and Penn/Edgar. they aren't for submissions or knock outs. if you tap, you go to the end of the line.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
