My Musings volume 2, or "STFU, the shit hasn't hit the fan yet"...

1. Our offense is without some of its top weapons. Smitty, Stewart, and Otah are going to make big differences when they return.

2. Our defense is going to be good, even with all the personnel changeover we had. We are young, fast, and hungry.

...and now for some player specifics from last night...

3. Matt Moore is still going to be our starter. Jimmy Clausen still looks like he can be if the need arises.

4. Jordan Gross didn't have a penalty last night. This is a big change from last week.

5. Last night proved that Dwayne Jarrett and Kenny Moore will make the team. The only options besides them are unproven, untested, need to bulk up, and scared... I still say we carry 6 WRs going into the season... Smith, Jarrett, Moore, LaFell, Wright, and Edwards...

6. Eric Moore is still positioning himself to make the team... If he does, I don't think any team in the league will have more Moore's than the Panthers...

7. Speaking of the DE position, Hilee Taylor is a ghost...

8. Derek Landri got on my radar last night... I think I missed him the first week because I was looking for a black guy... Unfortunately, I haven't noticed Corvey Irvin yet...

9. Armanti Edwards needs to focus on either returning or receiving... one or the other... I'd like to see him in on some KRs as opposed to PRs, as KRs carry less pressure, and his mistakes at this point are mental...

10. LaFell needs to be more physical and not let himself be pushed around when the ball is thrown his way...

11. The OL, from first team to last, needs to pick up blitzes better...

12. The QBs need to make hot reads better against the blitz... Call the smoke route more or something...

13. It is preseason, and we were playing against (and holding our own) against a very similar team philosophy wise... This is an accomplishment in that the Jets' defense is probably one of the best in football, from their starters to their 3rd stringers...

14. John Fox still kills me when he claps after a crap play... I want to jump through the screen and show some anger/attitude on the sidelines for him sometimes...

15. If you don't learn from your mistakes, you are prone to repeat them... Everyone on our roster needs to hear this... This is what preseason is for... Work out those kinks!

16. The Saltman ALMOST guessed the Jets rushing yardage, but he was one yard over... I'm glad he didn't get it, because Jangler and others would be whining that his guess was too close to Ground Zero...

17. Julius Peppers had a good game for the Bears this weekend...

18. Greg Hardy still impresses me, and his read/react reminds me a lot of the guy above...

19. David Gettis is still on his way to the practice squad...

20. CJ Wilson will make the cut...

21 Jordan Pugh will make the 53 man roster too...

That is all off the top of my head... If I think of anything else, I'll add it later...

He was pissed off and yelling "holding" at some point late in the game. I thought that might make some people happy.

I was impressed with Pugh. Not that my opinion carries much weight.

Hard to really argue any of this from my point of view!

CRAP! Sloth reminded me of one I forgot to add...

22. Gilyard looked good in his Rams debut as a returner (even though he didn't get much time at WR)

;)

Smarmy bastard. I went to look up his stats after our game, saw he had no receptions and started to make a post in one of the Armanti bitchathon threads. Then I checked his KR stats and got my sadface on.

I think the O-line having a hard time picking up blitzes because they are spending much time in the film room. Playing the Titans will probably really help the offense.

Good point... a lot of that comes from lack of game planning...

The Titans game, even though not much of a plan will still exist, should be a good test for our starters on both sides of the ball... Our Defense should be able to hold them pretty good if they can contain CJ, and our Offense should be able to move the ball a lot better than the first two weeks against great defenses...

I'm going to go ahead and predict 129 yards rushing for the Titans.

I know Eric Moore is playing great but I just dont see how he makes the team..if we carry 5 DT

The thing that might help him is Norwood is being listed as a LB, right? If he is listed as a DE that throws him off the depth chart for good.

I've said this in about a hundred threads now.....

PR is the hardest job on the field. I understand the coaching staffs desire to see AE return punts because of his athletic ability but it is not in his or their best interest to have him doing it at this point in his carreer.

He is not ready to take on that task yet.

It is something that really takes a lot of cojones to do and a lot of players can't do it.

Watching the ball while 10 guys are running for you, hoping that you make a mistake is difficult. Make the man a WR and let him learn that to the best of his ability.

    • Right...I think they've done really well. No one's going to bat 1000% but they've addressed areas of need and there's no comparison to the overall talent of the team now than when DC and then Morgan got the reigns. This whole season is about seeing how much of a step up can Bryce and this team make. If Bryce can't and last year is as good as it gets for him then at least we have a talented roster for the next guy. I think we're going to be good this season
    • I said could, not would. I recognize he has potential based on past performance. Compared to what KP has done, Howell has more potential and the physical traits to make noise. KP has small hands and a weak arm. Not something you want in even your backup QB.  I've been hammering since last off-season before we re-signed Dalton, improve the room. Other than getting younger, I don't see how anyone can say we legitimately improved the room or even tried. We might as well have signed Josh Rosen.  Dalton is still on the roster for now. That's 3 QBs unless we trade or cut him. He's still Bryce's mentor after all. Do you believe we are going to draft someone with potential and give them a legitimate opportunity to develop from the practice squad? Are we going to carry 3 QBs on the active roster? 4 for a developmental rookie? Are we going to potentially cut KP if we draft a rookie and he's outperformed? Doubtful. Cutting Dalton(if we can't trade him) and KP would be 8m in wasted cap space.  I chose Howell as an example because he showed promise in his only full season as a starter. You could plug in another name with the physical traits and potential and what i said would still apply. KP showed almost nothing and was benched. I genuinely don't care if it’s rookie pick as long as there is the potential to develop into a future NFL QB.  As much as I can't stand him, Bellichek was always developing a number 2 QB even with the GOAT as his starter. The wisdom of that was evident when Cassell came in when Brady was hurt week 1 and went 11-5 and almost made the wildcard, which 11-5 gets you almost any other year. I give credit where it's due though. Cassel and Jimmy G both came into the league as developmental QBs, potential QB1s, and went on to have careers.  You never know if you never try. KP feels like a punt in addressing the most important position on the field. Bryce has never played 2 full games of franchise QB level football back to back.  If Bryce progresses, are you ready to offer a 280m 5 year extension based off a one hit wonder year? If Bryce regresses and we need a QB in 27, are we going to trade a fortune away again to trade up to 1 to get one? Are you ready to do the past 3 years all over again?  To me, it's not about Kenny Pickett. It's about the move itself. It was a feeble attempt to improve the QB room. We better hope Bryce succeeds, because if he doesn't, we literally have no backup plan right now.
    • IOL that early isn’t good value at all. We have a LT who might not ever be good again and a RT that might retire soon. T seems deep early in this draft, so I’d go there in the 1st.
