Matt Moore's Biggest Weakness?

To me, it's one of two things.

Either, Moore's late season success last year was a "fluke" because he was "new" and defenses weren't prepared for him, or we REALLY need a #2 receiver... BADLY!

I don't know.

I do feel that defenses finally got a chance to study game tape on Moore and figure him out and I think some fans are in for a shocker... that Moore isn't as good at his late season run led some to believe.

So far Moore's success has come when the RB's put up between 150+ yards a game. I do not think he has yet to win a game when the run game was stuffed. Whether or not he can when that happens is still yet to be determined.

I have a hard time blaming the O-Line as much as some have here.

Moore played poorly and made some very bad decisions.

I usually stand by our coaching staff, but I think Davidson panicked when we got behind and that made Moore even worse.

Not having a running game is only an option for two or three of the elite best of the best QB's around. Once the Giants figured out we had completely given up on the run they pinned their ears back and went directly to the QB.

An O-Line can't be perfect to start with, but when your QB is stinking it up and the play calling isn't any better what do you expect from them?

Well said Vagrant, Matt Moore's biggest problem....us. As soon as Pickles was drafted everyone started calling for his head. Despite how well he played for us last year, we happily rolled on him in a heart beat for a kid from a big school with a big name. Despite not being able to win games in college we all assumed he could dominate in the NFL. (sounds silly doesn't it)

This is exactly what I was thinking when we drafted Jimmy and I threw my cup at the tv. It appears to me that we have most likely destroyed the confidence and most likely the career of a guy that did nothing but win games for us when called upon. Really sad if you ask me.

I hope Matt can come back and get his head right. If not I hope Jimmy comes in and lights it up and that someone else gives Matt a chance somewhere else.

Matt Moore's biggest weakness to me looked like the fact that he probably threw up in his helmet on the way onto the field. He looked NOTHING like the cocky, prepared, and mentally tough kid that walked on the field after the disaster of a season last year. I think the pressure got to him more than anything else. His best drive was the 2 minute drill to end the half when he just went out there, made his reads, and reacted to the defense. No thinking, just going out there and doing what a QB does.

He carried the weight of the entire QB competition, fan and person expectations, and the knowledge of being "the guy", out on the field with him yesterday and he collapsed under that weight.

Now, we Clausen has the same opportunity that Moore had last year if Moore isn't ready to play next week. Coming into a win win situation where you couldn't possibly be worse than the guy was last week, so you can go out there and play football. It wouldn't shock me if Clausen looked a lot better considering the circumstances.

To me, Matt Moore's biggest weakness yesterday was his desire to look like he deserved the starting job. He wasn't just playing against the Giants, he was playing against his own personal expectations as well as the expectations of the fans and coaches as well as his teammates. He never relaxed back there.

Plus, the out routes to the sidelines aren't his throw and the coaching staff has to see that as easy as we do. He doesn't have the pop in his arm to put those throws there with the amount of consistency required to make it work. It's the hardest throw you can ask a QB to make. He also tried to force big plays where none existed. Hoping that Barnidge would jump over 4 DB and make a TD catch was hopeful at best. Even the throw to Smith for a TD was somewhat badly thrown.

This, he just let the pressure get to him. The concussion didn't help either.

Is he alowed to audible?

Apparently he doesn't know how to. In addition to his tunnel vision and his poor decision making that's another thing that worries me. A QB that has been in the league as long as Matt should:

a)be able to read a defense at the line of scrimmage and audible out of a bad play call

B) progress through his reads and hit the open man whether it's Smitty down the sideline or Barnidge underneath or anyone in between.

c) move around in the pocket or either roll out of it to make a play

d) not repeatedly lob the ball into triple and quadruple coverage.

Thats whats so encouraging about Clausen, even as a rookie he seems to do most of those things well. Barring the situation he was thrown into at the end of the Giants game, Clausen knows how to read a defense and is smart enough to audible out of a bad play. He did it numerous time's during his limited playing time in the pre-season.

Now am I saying Clausen is gonna step in and set the NFL on fire all of the sudden?

No.

But I do believe with every fiber of my being that Pickle boy is the best QB the Panthers have and definitely has the potential to be a pretty good QB one day. That said, if he starts this week vs. the Bucs and tears their ass up, I still won't be thoroughly convinced(cause it's the Bucs) but it will be a good start and something positive for him to build on. Another thing, obviously our Line must get better in pass protection to help Clausen, but they've also got to get back to what the Panthers do best, running the f***ing ball down our opponents throats. That alone will take a ton of pressure off of Clausen and help him to succeed. Alls I know is, Moore is obviously broken, both mentally and physically, and if Clausen can take advantage of this opportunity and turn it into something positive then we may be able to turn this already gloomy season around and at least win 7-8 games. With Matt at the helm playing like he did yesterday I can see us finishing behind the f***ing Raiders and the Lions at the end of the season.

While the OL played poorly, Moore seems incapable of seeing a blitz or feeling pressure. Did you see how Clausen moved within the pocket, maintained his poise, and continued to look for a man on his second snap? I've never seen Moore do that. It's frustrating, because he had a couple of nice runs in the game that showed that he has some good athleticism.

I think it already has. You watched the game yesterday didn't you?

Moore can't be blamed for that loss... The offensive line for the most part was garbage yesterday, which really concerns me, as thats supposed to be the strength of this team along with our running back tandem.

Moore getting gangbanged by the giants all day is one thing, But we pride ourselves on being a run first football team, and besides that 30 yarder dwill busted early... I didn't see any holes opened up for our running backs, repeatedly getting hit at the line of scrimmage.

So unless Otah is Jesus and will make everything ok when he gets back, this Oline needs to play alot better as a group if this team is going to make any noise this year.
