Yes, costs are playing a role in his decisions...take the Tank vs hayden vs Landri move.

JR is looking at and saying....is the marginal upside (if any) Tank adds worth 3 times the salary of Landri or Hayden. Reality check...it isn't.

It is easy to sit here and bash, when you are not the one writing the checks.

Like I said...outside a vet #2 WR signing, I agree with EVERY move this team has made so far.

I don't agree with a number of moves this offseason, but I think there is a valid excuse and a track record that indicates a way of doing business differently than this a majority of the time.

i easily see moore and davis being on the way out (unless davis recovers and signs for cheap which he may have to do).

a new coach comes in and i fully expect there to be some turnover. that could be why hurney hasn't signed his contract...waiting to see what happens there and if h new coach is someone he can work with or that will want to work with him.

jerry might have someone else in mind, esp. if hurney hasn't signed his contract. you don't trust the most important hiring job in an organization to a guy who hasn't committed himself to you. until hurney signs his deal, he has no vested interest in this organization and shouldn't be trusted with the hiring of a new coach.

it would be a poor management decision to let hurney make that call without himself being under contract, regardless of how much faith richardson has in him or the size of the contract he placed in front of him.

I will say that I agree with the Panthers philosophy in general... wouldn't want to see them become the Skins.

We are, like, super deep into the hypothetical now. I'm just saying it's unlikely that Hurney stays on with a coach that he doesn't like so that seems to be a weird thing to worry about.

I suspect that we'll end up with a team pay-roll that might even be higher than normal when the gurantees to folks like Jake are added in. Hard to agree to calling that "gone cheap".

Letting Pepper's walk ensured that even counting what we used on Delhomme. For next year we have committed something like 60 million so far which puts us in the bottom three along with Tampa and St Louis.

T think I saw the article that you are referring to , but as I recall, it was talking about money committed to contracts for 2011. There is no way we're only shelling out 60 mill includiing the guarantees this year.

Again off the top of my head I think the number for this year was something like 110 million. The other point is that the 60 million for 2011 only counts who we have under contract. Once they actually do decide to sign their free agents if they do, that 60 million will go up. In fact I have said that if they actually sign most of their core group like Wiliams, Davis, Kalil, etc, their salary could go up by 80-100 million more. All of the signing bonuses while being able to be prorated as part of the new cap over time are included as part of the team's salary in the year they are paid. That is one of the reasons I question whether Richardson will sign some of these guys.

First off, let’s remember there is no salary cap for 2010. If there was, the Panthers would be sitting at $124 million right now. Here’s the part that’s highly significant -- $29.2 million of that is in what would be called “dead money’’ in a capped year.

Thje projected Panthers payroll for 2010 is less than .5 mill below '09. That essentually means that we distributed 20 mill in Peppers deal mostly to Delhomme.

don't have a problem with the panthers philsophy(just the execution of it) when was the last time the steelers signed a big name free agent from another team? they compete at the highest level on a regular basis even tho they've changed several coaches and front office people over the years. they draft players who fit their system & sign middle market free agents to fill needs.they went from contenders to champions once the found a true franchise qb(something that will hold the panthers back until they find one)
