Join the Movement - WE WANT BILL (Cowher for Head Coach)

Anyone that uses Harbuagh's new deal as a reason he wouldn't be an option hasn't been paying attention to College football very long. He might not want to leave but it wont be because of his deal.

But just like all the Player and Coaches we as fans want it will probably be someone out of left field no one expects (or worse Fox is retained). Heres to another 3/4 of a decade of mediocrity.

He interviewed with the Jets last year... it's obviously on his mind to move to the NFL.

That's one of the silliest things ever posted here
By a teams fan base publicly displaying their desire for a coach to be here, you add another element to a potential candidates reasoning for joining a team, other than money.

Example: Bill Cowher may get offered a salary lower than he would be willing to come coach the Panthers, but may see the large fan base that is in very much support of him coaching this team, which will instill confidence in his decision to come here whether or not the money is exactly right. This hypothetical situation could work for any top notch potential candidate.

i agree with mr. scot here.

the whole thing has made me laugh. i love the discussion but do i think that the fans have any say or vote in the matter?

absolutely not.

should we?

absolutely not. we're customers....that's it. nothing more, nothing less. we don't have anywhere close to the knowledge we need to make a decision. as much as i would like for harbaugh to come here and cowher/gruden to go somewhere else and rip them off, i admit i don't make personnel decisions and i shouldn't....at least not in this instance.

i may think i know a lot about this game (as i'm sure many in here do as well), but i'm nowhere near an industry insider. i'm just a fan. i might be a slightly educated fan but still just a fan and just a customer.

any time i see fan movements i start to laugh because i think it's silly that fans think they have much say in the matter. on rare occassions, this might be true. the fans booed david carr off the field and he was listed on the injury report with a "fragile psyche" because of it...never touching the ball with those gloves again. also, fan movement helped get the panthers logos on the field. it wasn't on the 50 yard line liked we hoped but the billboard campaign and letters worked (i suppose) on getting it on there. they threw us a bone on that one.

any serious hiring decisions, though, should be left to the grown ups. it should be left to JR and hurney. can we voice our opinions? sure. it won't matter much.

i know that this "hire bill" movement is probably giving you a lot of purpose right now but in the end it will have very little impact on the decision being made (and thats being optimistic). i don't want them to hire who we want as fans going on whatever limited knowledge we have. i don't want them to hire the popular guy. i want them to hire the person that will win us games. they have a better understanding of the whole situation. they are handling it and they will. if they choose the right one, we'll cheer. if the choose the wrong one, we'll bitch and moan like we're doing now and some bloke will come along and get another fan movement going that will make a tiny bit of noise that someone in the FO might be made aware of while they sit back and say, "hm. that's interesting." and then go about making the decisions for the team...doing what they get paid for just like they are doing now and will do when it comes time to hire the next coach.

one thing that the "we want bill" movement might do is drive up the price for cowher because that means he might be responsible for selling more tickets and increased revenue. popularity makes one more expensive.

You can speak your desires all you want. If ANY franchise listens to its fans when it comes to who to select as a coach.....they are doomed to complete failure.

So you think Cowher would turn down a few extra million dollars because the fanbase shows enthusiasm, eh?

Riiiiiiight.

dr-evil-02.jpg

Rumor is that Cowher wants the Giants job, one which would not only offer a higher salary and more visibility but a more "entusiastic" fanbase.

Add in that no owner or GM worth anything is going to listen to fans when it comes to coaching choices. Heck, you can't even get the fans on this board united behind one guy.

It is tough, but at the same time we will help bring our fans together and show some damn pride... the panthers next head coach could be a paradigm shift and draw more fans and team pride...

Why don't we work on keeping our fans united and interested in the next season, than keep them thinking about how shitty this one is going to be?

Uniting Panthers fans together on separate causes (different than just cheering for them to win) will show and attract other people to cheer and build confidence and pride in our team and fan base. People thinking "Wow look how passionate Panthers fans are about improving their team and coaching staff, even though this season is in shambles"

If you ever want to have a die hard fan base much like the packers or steelers we need to do things like this now.

I completely understand and agree with what you've said... you're not seeing what the movement is truly about... It doesn't matter if Bill Cowher or whoever gets hired...That's not the point...

The point is to build (not lose) fan unity and pride during a shitty season and express our desire to our team and to management that "we want" a top level coach, we want someone who will take us to the next level and build the team that can dominate the NFL!

i thought winning was what did it...that and being around 50 or so years. pretty sure it wasn't some mobilization of the fan base. a consistently winning team that is around for a long time will do that all on it's own.

    • Ok--I have seen some sample items, and I would like to see something (if possible) measures on field intelligence--maybe how quickly you can grasp a playbook or absorb film session adjustments...Back when we had Morrison as team president and Hurney as GM, I offered to assess (as part of my research in education requirement at a University) emotional intelligence and learning styles of players to help coaches teach more effectively.  Morrison loved it and contacted me about it.  Hurney was not interested, and it fell through the cracks.  My pitch?  If only 50% of first-rounders become successful NFL players and that number drops significantly, can you tell me that you are effectively measuring talent?  Morrison thought it was a good point and wanted to do something that might improve long-term success rates--that would impact the cap management, etc.  Marty, according to Morrison, said he was not interested at this time and if so, he would want a football guy to do it.  (I told Morrison that I played in college and Hurney, a sports reporter at one time, did not. (He told me that Hurney played as a Guard in college--who knew?) Any way, about that time, Morrison left (2017) and the idea was dropped.  I reached back out a year later or so to Marty was still not interested.  A few days later, his wife accused him of assault or something, so I dropped it.
    • Pretty sure they still do the Wonderlic they just don't publicly release the scores.
    • I just thought he was under the radar--but thanks for opening our eyes to him.  I think we should have better measures for intelligence--such as reaction time, angles, etc. Legette is raw as heck, for example, and his RAS was very high.  We used to do the Wonderlic (which was not great) but to know how effectively a player makes on field decisions would be great.
