There are rumors that the Panthers are shopping Steve Smith

The team is rebuilding from the foundaton. Steve's age prevents him from being there for over two more years anyway. we have a franchise QB and 2 franchise backs, we need a new franchise WR and make a trade for Greg olsen. We need a complete overhaul. ;) Replace the coach and GM. This year is done already but they can position themselves in a position to compete consistently for years. Two words...... Jon Gruden!

do you guys realize that all it takes is ONE good off-season to turn a team around? quit with all this "he won't get a ring here." teams NEED veterans to win championships. trading Smith would set this franchise back years, especially when you look at their track record in drafting receivers.

let's take a look at a team that refused to trade their best receiver, the Bengals. Chad Ochocinco(32) publicly requested a trade following a 7-9 season, but the Bengals wouldn't trade him. Just one season after he requested a trade, they won their division and made the playoffs, along with making the pro bowl. Sure, they didn't do well in the playoffs, but the fact is they went from a 4 win season to making the playoffs.

you REALLY want to piss the players off by trading one of the best receivers in the game and one of the greatest Panthers for a mid-round(3rd round at best) draft pick? seriously?

I read most of the entries, but not all. Sorry if this repeats, but I am not sure it will. I say trade both Smitty and DWill.

Here is what I would do: Trade DWill to New England for our Amanti pick back. We are not going to offer him what others will in free agency. Rarely are second contracts beneficial to the team when a RB is the issue. You get two more years, pay for 5. With Stewart and Goodson, we will not offer much because the need is not as great.

Smith was in Clausen's face--the face of the future of this franchise--during the game Sunday. JR may not like that. I imagine SS has run out of second chances in Charlotte. He will be 32 and becoming a #2 wr next year. We have 4 #2 wrs. We need a #1. Can we get a first rounder from Washington? Minnesota? Wonder if we sent Smith and DW to NE for disgruntled Moss and two second rounders? Moss plays this season, becomes a free agent, so he has minimal trade value. The Armanti second rounder is a top 40 pick.

Then we can address RG, OLB, CB, WR, C, and DT next season. We would be well below the salary cap and have five picks in the first three rounds. We are going to lose DW anyway, and SS is headed toward becoming a tumor. Cash them in.

As for Clausen, our WRs need the chance to get better. SS in his ear is more damaging than throwing a few pics. Stay with Gettis, Lafell and work Goodson, the TEs, etc. Somebody kidnap Davidson and replace him with a pre-recorded Droid. JC will endure the season, like Manning did when he threw a boatload of ints as a rook.

If we were to trade Steve Smith, we would have to get a veteran receiver in trade... One team I could see as a trade partner would be SD. They could use a legit threat, and maybe they could include Patrick Crayton. Hes not a flashy receiver, but he is tough, and is willing to go over the middle for Jimmy. Hes been very consistent over the years.

Look, you're not going to get value for Smith (in terms of his value to the team), and you may not for Williams, either. Honestly, Williams has very little wear and tear and I think we'd get 5 years out of him right here, but other teams would look at him, and they'd probably be more willing to sign him in FA than trade a draft pick. I would rather we find a home for Stewart, but who would take him with his injury history?

Meh. If this team loses Smith and Stewart, sure, I'll still be a fan, but my two favorite players will be gone. Beason is on his way up that list, but yeah.

Williams was rode hard at Memphis, but I see your point. I just don't see him staying next year. You will get value now, but the market dwindles the more teams become eliminated. NE would love DW. SS is done as a #1, at least he will be in 2011. What are his assets? His speed and his attitude. When the speed and his attitude falter, he is not a #1 any longer. I think he has started his downward slope. Even so, he is still good. Don't discount, however, the distraction he has been to this team. Punching teammates, yelling at QBs--ever watch him practice? Kasay is the only player who will talk to him. I think he is a bit of a cancer, but his play has made it worthwhile. If I could get a "win now" team to drop a first rounder for him now, I would take it. Maybe Gettis, LaFell, Edwards, etc. step up. Maybe Goodson and Barnidge and Rosario increase their roles. Why not? We aren't getting Smith the ball now anyway. He is rotting on the vine.

This is so stupid. I cant believe people want us to trade our great players. Smith will retire a Panther. Dwill should be franchised next year, at least. That would give us another year, with hopefully a new coach, to decide which RB to keep. I know Smith is past his prime, but it is not even about that. Smith is the Carolina Panthers. He is our most recognized player. I just dont see him ever leaving. I just hope our QB can get good enough, quick enough to give him a couple more 1000 yard seasons. I want him to be the first Panther in the Hall of Fame.

    • These are the three deep throw attempts that Will Levis made in week 12. His first one is a beauty; Levis and Westbrook-Ikhine gets the safety to bite on a deep dig only to go over the top for the score. His second throw is another beauty: a crosser to Calvin Ridley reminiscent of Bryce to XL (though Ridley has noticeably more separation on his route). His third and final deep shot was an incompletion from his own endzone on 3rd & 14 with pressure coming down on him (to me, this seems like a solid throw).   Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-02.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro.mp4 Film Room Playlist NFL Pro-01.mp4 Levis took half of the deep shots that Young did. The differences are: Ridley had much better separation than XL, which is why his deep crosser turned into a 63yd play since he was able to scamper for another 15+ after the catch. Westbrook-Ikhine holds on to his TD pass. Bryce had to throw one away to preserve time for a field goal. Bryce had two more throws that were incomplete due to the WR Are we really holding the three WR errors and clock management decision against Bryce in order to say that Will was better throwing deep in week 12? That's not passing the eye test nor is it confirmed by the data.
    • If you go on the PUP list before the season starts, you are gone for the year. If you start the year on the PUP list then you can get off of it. Kind of semantics, but we are putting him on the PUP list now which is before week 1, that’s why people who come off of it aren’t really on the PUP list until week 1, hence you usually hear right before the season that they are “starting the year” on the PUP list. I think PUP list and IR may basically be the serve the same purpose now because you also sometimes hear that if a player is added to the IR before week 1 that they aren’t eligible to come off the IR list for the entire year. Now, everyone added to IR (post week 1) can come off after 4 (or more) games so the PUP list is meaningless since it’s 6 games and starts at week 1. Anyone added to PUP or IR in the preseason is gone for the year.
