Are Panthers building WR through the draft?

Everyones least favorite coach drafted Smith.

The answer is no, Fox/Hurney can't spot a good WR to save their lives.

At least they aren't the only ones with this issue.

The thing about Smith is, he had the determination to get better on his own. Since he was drafted as a return man, he had to prove to everybody he is a receiver. It seems like all the recievers that have been drafted by Hurney and Fox have no desire to become elite on their own, that it would just be handed to them. I am no fan of TO but at least he is serious about being the best on the field and does try. Now he is just trying to keep up with the kids....not doing a good job of it, but he still looks better than any of our #2s or #3s past or present.

Jangler is on the money. Smith was accidental--drafted in the 3rd round as a return man. My point is this: If you can't find a WR in the draft that gives you what you want, why not go after a free agent? Are we developing WRs here? We didn't re-sign Moose and we knew what we had in Jarrett. I suppose we thought a converted QB and a 4.6 speedster with no hands would save the day. Gettis was an afterthought.

Too early to judge Edwards and LaFell? I am not--I am judging Hurfox. Edwards and LaFell were (obviously) supposed to contribute right away. They are not close to being ready. If you draft projects then have options to go to while they develop. Marshall or Boldin would have been fine here for 2 years until the rookies were ripe. Fox, Hurney, Davidson like to rest on laurels. They thought they could run the ball 75% of the time this year. Steve Smith will be screaming for a trade if he has not already.

You mean to tell me a run first team hasn't drafted a WR worth a damn?

Stop the presses!

We are a run only team. The Steelers are a run-first team, but even they have recently gone after players like Plaxico Burris, Santanio Holmes, and Limas Sweed early in the draft to compliment Hines Ward. Maybe they all didn't work out. What have we brought in? Colbert, Jarrett? And the rest were third rounders or later. Hurfox rested on what we inherited and rode the wave. The best move we made was to take Moose back from Chicago. THe worst move we made was letting him slip away, thinking Colbert/Carter were the answer.

What if i were to tell you we could get a corner that can shut down both of them. Is that something you might be interested in?

Considering what we have in the 23 year old WR dept, adding another doesn't make sense. Peterson is as good a CB as I have seen in college since Deon, although I didn't see Revis play.

I would also have to consider the fact that Marshall is not coming back (rather happy about that). McClain or Munnerlyn? Better keep them where they are. CB is a bigger need and the best player available.

WR? We need a veteran. Randy Moss for a year? Trade Steve Smith to Minnesota for injured Sydney Rice?

Colbert and Jarret are the only WR's we truly tried on that failed. And even then Colbert obviously had talent and proved it, so Im hestiant to say they failed at that. But he did.

Those two had something in common.

Smith was under a different coach and different chief of scouting.

Free agency's not a cure-all. You have busts there too. We went the free agent route with Keyshawn and it didn't produce the desired result either.

I'm pretty happy with the results so far from Gettis and LaFell, and indications are we may see Edwards soon.

Consider that if even just two of those three turn out well, this team will be set for years to come.

How is it obvious? No coach/GM expects a second round WR to be a big impact right away. Hurney has even come out and said he knew Edwards would be a process.

You would be willing to give away two second round picks and a big contract to Marshall for him to only play two years here? Thats not logical.

The reason I know they expected Edwards and LaFell to contiribute right away:

1. THey did not re-sign Moose.

2. The watched other WRs in free agency walk by without even winking at them.

3. They called Jarrett the starter when they had no intention of ever starting him barring a miracle.

4. Edwards was catching punts, kickoffs, running Wildcat, in addition to playing WR in the preseason. If you seriously want to bring along a player, do you pile everything on his plate at once?

Calling Edwards a project is a way to save face and pray he does materialize.

As for the Marshall/2nd rounders comment, I think you misread my post.

1. Lafell maybe but not Edwards

2. Their saving money

3. We don't know whats up with Jarrett

4. Whenever they feel like he is ready, punts, wildcat, kickoffs is what they are going to want him to do when he gets a uni.

Well, to be honest, all of these guys were pretty damn good in college. The bigger issue is the inability of a coaching staff to develop these young men into NFL caliber receivers.
