Williams Trade Story (The Actual Source)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Williams has missed more games than Stewart the past two seasons, so who's really more likely to get hurt? Stewart doesn't practice but still produces at a high level, unless we are losing badly and he doesn't get any carries.

In the past that might be true but this year.

Williams- 43 carries- 180 yards 4.3 average

Stewart-21 carries-68 yards 3.2 average

just sayin

While I don't think the source is very reliable or that the details are as he says, I wouldn't doubt that there are trade conversations (notice I didn't say talks) between the Panthers and Packers involving either Williams and/or Stewart.

Madhatter raised a great point and for those that think Williams should be untouchable answer these two questions:

1) What type of deal would Williams recieve/want either now or on the open market?

2) What type of deal should the Panthers give him that would be in the best interest of the team?

I agree with Madhatter that a 6 year deal worth about $40MM would be what Williams could get on the open market. However, the deal the Panthers need to make would be about a 3 year deal worth about $16MM.

Getting Stewart and Goodson signed to extentions would be the better options at this point.

I expect this team will make an offer structured similar to the last one Foster signed. That wasn't a 6 yr deal. With no new CBA, we have another year of RFA to help us out and then can tag to keep from breaking the bank on a long term deal the team won't want.

Stewart seems to start slow at the beginning and pick it up at the end of the season, likely due to skipping the off season. Williams carries the load early but wears down causiing the need to shift to Stewart.

In my opinion Williams is one of the nicest guys in the NFL, i highly doubt he would be like Vincent Jackson or revis who hold out till they get there contract, im pretty confident he would re-sign with the panthers for cheaper then getting another contract with another team, He just seems like that kind of guy.

i doubt our FO will trade williams or let him go at the end of the season for nothing, that would be dumb of them i think our FO is a bit brighter then that.

Well, they are different kinds if backs. Williams is shiftier and breaks more long runs, keeping his average high. Plus, hes had more opportunities to perform, given he's the starter and has twice as many carries. Stewart is a different kind of back, more of a workhorse who gets better with more carries, though he does have speed to break long runs too. If teams are loading up the box like they are this year, and we are having to play catch-up I would expect Williams to look more impressive given he's the starter.

My original point was that while I love them both, but we cant point to Stewart's injury history without mentioning that Williams has missed more games even with Stewart there to take the pressure off of him.

have seen a williams trade coming since we drafted stewart. at some point it will become impossible to keep two starting RB's. stewart has the least use so it only makes sense to get something for williams. the packers seem the perfect fit and will likely win a ring there which i doubt he'd do in carolina since we will be rebuilding for the next 5 years.

Williams is quicker and accerlerates faster but Stewart is actually much better after first contact and breaking tackles. as for long runs- Williams in 2009 had 7 rushes for more than 20 yards and 3 for more than 40. Stewart had 11 rushes for more than 20 yards and 2 for more than 40, so you actually have it backwards for 2009. Williams had all the long runs in 2008 not 2009.

If people are loading the box i would give it to Stewart more. he has the better ability to break tackles and once he gets to the second level make a play. With teams run blitzing and loading the box it makes it hard for Williams to get free.

For that matter I do think Stewart is not 100% yet. You can see it in his running so far. Maybe like last year he will pick it as we go.

Why would we want to trade D. Will? He's by far the best and most dependable RB on the roster. Stewart never even practices during the offseason and is left to shake off the rust during the season, when the games count. If I'd trade any RB, it would be Stewart or Sutton. Stewart 1st because he would be the most expensive to keep. With the Peppers money, resign D. Will.

Well in regards to long runs I wasnt talking about previous years, just this year. But I alsot didn't check the stats so maybe Stewart has more long runs this year too. It's funny, your post almost suggests that Stewart is the better running back when healthy, though not trying to put words in your mouth.

You are VERY VERY naive to think that Williams will give Carolina a discount. This is his last big payday and will be his nestegg for the rest of his life. He WILL be looking to maximize his earning potential.

There are very few players that have the kind of loyalty that many of you think. This is a business....plain and simple.
