I think you would find that old trope is significantly less accurate in the modern era. Don't get me wrong, you are always gonna have a chunk of dum-dums but there are a lot less of those "athletes that can't read" stories than the 80's and 90's. A lot of the development systems around young athletes actually require them to be considerably sharper and there is more focus on the educational aspects because not being able to survive in a formal educational environment is such a career limiting factor. I think the biggest evolution has been the improvements in the support systems around the athletes. The people around them are rarely dismissive of education anymore and a college degree now has the significance of a high school diploma. It's a rather basic component.
