The REAL reason we are the worst in the league

*This is the first time I have posted here but I have been following the huddle for a few years now. First thing - I am a savy seasoned veteran when it comes to the panthers. *Second thing - hello to everyone on the huddle.*

Ok here goes....the reason we are worst in the league i that we have no explosive players. *Not people with fast forty times because the league is full of those but those with a fast short shuttle - indicitive of explosion and great quickness. *Plays like screens, smokes, punts, kickoffs. These plays that change the landscape of the game with one explosive play. *

Let's look at the patriots for example. They have the all world wes welker. What makes him that good really? *Not his straight line speed that's for sure. It is his explosion. He won't outrun people down the field but he will easily beat a corner to the first down marker. Short shuttle - 4.01 **

How bout juleen edleman (the next welker) short shuttle - 3.91

How bout brandon Tate who was tearing up the field all night last night. Short shuttle - 4.12

How about those terrible chiefs that are 3-0. Oh yeah they have two offensive weapons that make them very hard to beat even though they have a very average QB. Jamaal Charles is extremely explosive. Next to Chris Johnson he is the most dangerous out of the backfield. Along with his straight line speed he has great lateral quickness. (Could not find his shuttle time.). How about Dexter mccluster. Short shuttle - 4.06 This kid looks like is shot out of a cannon every time he gets the ball in his hands. With him and Jamaal out of the backfield and lined up at reciever they are undefeated. As a panther this is very dissappointing. We have three staring receivers at 6-2 or over which explains one huge reason our passing games stinks. These guys have no lateral explosion to make a defender miss and move the chains. Smitty used to be that guy for us but he has lost a step and is not the same. Then they draft armantI who has some speed but honestly he is not very explosive. *Just look at all the teams around the league that have drafted explosive players while we are only drafting possesion style players. So what they can block. Big whoopie!!! They can't outrun defenders to move the chains. We all know that one big play (created by a players explosiveness)can ignite an offense and frankly the whole team. That is exactly what we have lived off for the last three years with smitty but he can't carry the offense any longer. I never wanted to see a complete staff overhaul but I think we need a FO that can draft players that can make their own plays....PLAYMAKERS

defense: primarily those great pass rushers that use that three cone speed to get by those tackles. Somebody please help us

First of all, don't ever think that a combine drill can tell you much about a football player. There are hundreds of guys that make tons of money teaching players how to cheat that very drill that you hang your hat on. If you were to be literal with a closed (predetermined movement pattern) drill, then a vertical would be a better predictor of explosiveness.

Second, Charly Martin (4.01)/Dexter Jackson (4.00)/and Kenny Moore (4.1) all ran similar times. I was there, and can also tell you that the scouts from the Panthers did not time a short shuttle under 4 seconds before the draft.

I swear if you guys don't stop spewing this bs about Smith losing a step I'm gonna start passing out vic cards.

The real problem, offensively anyways, is that we don't scheme to our players strengths and skills. (except Smith) Mike Goodson, Deangelo Williams, AE, all accelerate fast. Hell I bet Belicheat could make something out of Trent Guy.

Jesus I mean Keary Colbert had deceptive quickness was actually pretty good his first year and then he turned to poo. A lot of it was on him, but scheme does have something to do with it.

We are just now using Rosario as a consistent receiving option after 3 years. It's a joke. Why don't we get Barnidge involved? Why don't we put Goodson out at WR more?

I'm all for smash mouth football but we have a total lack of offensive creativity. Fox chews his gum. Davidson draws up 1st and 2nd run down plays( Run to the line and fall 2yds). All the while we are wasting good talent on the bench.

And no offense but fug Jeff King. I like the guy and he's consistent but he's not going to win you football games. He shouldn't be getting so much time over Gary.

As garbage as DJ was they could have drawn up some plays to at least make him not completely useless.

    • Just to clarify: I'm not arguing that height or footwork can’t affect QB play. I'm asking how those concerns translate into measurable, consistent outcomes. That’s the standard we should be applying to all QBs, not just Bryce. If height is such a limitation, then we'd expect to see elevated batted passes or poor pressure evasion. Yet none of that shows up in the data. Bryce was one of the lowest in the league for batted passes and his 16.9 pressure-to-sack ratio is good enough for 9th out of all QBs with 300+ dropbacks. So if you believe footwork tied to height is a meaningful issue, what metric shows that because two that would aren't doing so? This isn't about denying flaws. It's about applying fair, consistent standards because otherwise we’re not evaluating performance which means that it's not analysis taking place... it's just going off of the vibes that somebody has consciously decided on. Citing one red zone play you remember doesn't provide that consistent standard. I don't say that to dismiss your memory, but to emphasize that anecdotal evidence (especially from an avowed skeptic) shouldn’t carry more weight than consistent tape or analytics. For example, there was recently dissonance over Bryce's deep ball accuracy where it was implied that he was inaccurate throwing 20+ yards. Yet, the data and film show otherwise. And I unfortunately have to still ask since you won't directly answer: What specific metrics do you believe matter when evaluating whether a QB is top-10? You've mentioned YPA and passing yards per game, and that's fair. If that's what you're prioritizing, then let's call that your criteria but clarity matters because it prevents moving goalposts when the data doesn’t match one's expectations. I appreciate the response and hope that your holiday weekend goes well also. ❤️
    • Me too. I got other things I can do. Tie it up 2-2 and I will be back, but Im tired of watching us get swept.
