Mountaineer? Could see Hester at Wildcat Sunday

"Understandably, Lovie Smith would prefer not to "go there" in regard to a third QB behind Todd Collins and Caleb Hanie. It could be Devin Hester or Matt Forte, who could take direct snaps out of the "wildcat" formation. "We have an emergency plan," Smith said Thursday. "Most of the time, you don't get to that third quarterback in a game. Very, very seldom does it happen. But I'll just say without going into that and giving away too much more about our game plan, we have a guy in mind, maybe a couple of guys in mind, if we get down to No. 3. Hopefully we won't get to No. 3."

If the Panthers knock out 2 QB's, don't think there is much worry about what happens after that.

To state the headline differently, I think that seeing Hester at Wildcat could be as likely as seeing Armanti at Mountainier. Don't think it would take injuries to see it on Sunday.

I know we drafted Edwards and have put him in this "Mountaineer" formation but whatever happened to the Single Wing Offense with DeAngelo? In all seriousness, we ran that against the Falcons that one year when we had QB injuries and did REALLY well with it... why has that really not happened since? We have put Smitty in the gun for the wildcat... plus DWill did say that he can throw the ball :)

The difference is, Hester was never a QB. Armanti was. I think our Wildcat (The Mountaineer) will be way more deadly than it would with Hester back there.

It doesn't take a QB to run the wildcat. The speed of the runner is what makes it dangerous more so than the passing threat IMO.

Umm no. This has been proven to be false. You have to at least have a throwing threat in the Wildcat now to keep the defense honest.

Henning went to Miami, whooped the Pats with the same formation and it caught on like an STD.

Everybody and their mom started running it and defenses figured out how to stop it.

Now you have to have a real throwing threat to make it effective, most teams don't.

Umm no. The wildcat puts an extra playmaker on the field... like Hester. It's not used as a trick formation anymore, way too much tape from last year. It's used in siutations where the offense needs short yardage or a spark or in the case of Chicago because they are short of QBs.

      Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
