Why is DeAngelo being limited?

HIs offensive line is credited with being so good when for my money he gets the ball out so fast that even uncovered defensive guys can't sack him before the ball is gone. The same with Peyton and Warner. Guys like that make the line look much better while guys like Roethlisburger and Cutler make their lines look much worse by holding the ball.

The quarterback on our team who can actually have a good game and throw downfield will suddenly find that the o-line has miraculously improved overnight.

This also has a lot to do with play design. Their offenses are designed for three step drops and quick releases, ours, for the most part, is not.

Clausen is indeed making our Oline look worse than it is. I don't think they have been great by any stretch, but Clausen's propensity towards pulling the ball down and scrambling when it's completely unnecessary and throwing before the play develops make them look a lot worse than they are. And yes, he has been throwing like poo, did you see his last drive before he got pulled last week? None of his passes were within 10 yards of his intended target.

Did he roll out on every passing play?

I agree that our QBs suck. Both of them. But, what I'm trying to say is, our offensive line isn't very good. Specifically the right strong side.

That could also be because we can't throw worth poo, so defenses just blitz nine guys at a time.

That is true they do have an infinitely better playbook then we do. But how many times do team really blitz Brees either. If they do he makes them pay every time. They really work hand in hand.

I agree, but again, it's the play design and call. They recognize the blitz and call plays that are designed to negate it. We on the other hand see the blitz (or don't, I wonder somtimes) and decide to run right into it or call a 5 step drop that takes 6 seconds to develop and allow our QB to get gang tackled by three 300lb lineman.

I see the same thing and it pisses me off as well.

The Saints use tons of screens and even incorporate misdirections in those screen plays to make up for their weak run game. That opens up down the field plays, probably about a third of Brees' passes come within five yards of the line of scrimmage, which helps his ridiculous completion percentage. Against the Saints, we ran a successful screen pass to D on our very first offensive play, and havent seen one since.

    • Yeah if he can't step into the pocket and throw the ball without jumping in the air it's gonna be more of the same. I think someone his height could technically do it, I just don't know if he can break the bad habits. I liked Doug Flutie as a feel good story but I wouldn't have done a massive trade up for him and that's where the frustration lies with most people
    • This is what people are failing to realize, you cant take a 3/5/7 step drop and make it a 6/10/14 step drop and still think the OL can create a pocket.  All you have to do is run around the tackles and wait for BY to fall/scramble into your open arms, the chances of him stepping up into the pocket are miniscule because he wont be able to see the field in there.
