Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

I never really looked at it that way. I agree with you. Hopefully he comes out this year and we scure the #1 pick. But my question is... How do you know Harbaugh is looking to coach Pro next season? And if he did, what makes him take the Panthers over the 49ers or even the Cowboys? Dallas already has all the tools on offense to suit his Power Running game with great WR's. He might want a championship now and not later. Plus he is only 27-21 at Stanford. Not much experience at the college level IMO. But I do love his creativity.

Anyone got an answer?

we don't know. it's all specualtion.

panthers over the 49ers or cowboys? management? i don't know. threatening to draft his QB?

it might be that teams realize that he is a star on the rise. the way you get ahead is by taking advantage of people that are rising talents.

he could end up staying at stanford and become the coach K of college football.

i won't be heartbroken if we don't hire him. i'd rather us get him than any other team and i'll probaly be a little jealous, but if we win games, i won't care too much. i want progress and imo, harbaugh is the best candidate to bring that progress. whatever he does, i'm a fan of what he does. i just hope he doesn't end up coaching a rival.

Hurney saw fit to go running back with the #1 pick 2 times in 3 years. And the year previous to that he spent a 2nd rounder on a running back.

At least drafting Luck would make sense.

I see what you mean, you know, with the NFL switching to this whole "1 All-star RB is all we need" system.

So we should keep drafting players at a certain position until they show they're HoF worthy?
should we keep trying to improve at every position? absolutely.

do you think that if we had a choice between bradford and clausen that we would have picked clausen? do you think that if we knew that we would have the #1 pick overall this year, that we would have spent that 2nd round pick last year on a QB?

the success of this team going forward depends largely on who we have at QB. why wouldn't we want to have the best player possible there? if we can get a better QB without giving up too much, we absolutely should.

Actually I was serious. Quality running backs can be found in lower rounds. Witness Mike Goodson. QBs on the other hand, much tougher to come by. An oportunity to draft an Andrew Luck, well you hope it never comes around because it means you play like the Panthers have this year. But if you're there and he's there, you grab him. Even if you're going to deal him as the Chargers did Eli getting Phillip Rivers, Sean Merriman and Nate Keading, 3 Pro Bowlers.

I'm guessing Brett Favre, Aaron Rogers, and Tom Brady don't count do they?

I'm neutral on the entire subject.

because picking QBs like that off the tree is so easy.

for years this team has been content trying (using that word loosely) to find the next late round/undrafted QB stud rather than going shopping in the best place to find a stud QB. you want a QB that is going to be a success? the best place to find them is in the first round. does that mean that everyone you pick in the first is going to work out? nope. does that guarantee success?nope. it just means that most successful QBs are picked in the first round. your best chance of finding one is in the first. thats where we need to be shopping for one.

if you want to compete with the other QBs in the league, esp. in the NFCS, you need to have a really good QB. mediocre won't do it anymore.

Every QB picked to go first overall "is just special"

Clausen was "is just special" last year.

I don't see how people let the wool slide back down over their eyes every year.

Traditional PantherFan philosophy of the grass is always greener.

Eeeehhh, not really.

Every year there's a guy (or guys) that are considered the best in their particular class, but not all of those guys are on the same plane.

There was a year when Heath Shuler and Trent Dilfer were the best that the college ranks had to offer. And while people agreed they were first round caliber, nobody was confusing them with John Elway or Dan Marino. Guys like Elway, Marino, Peyton and others don't show up every year. They're once-in-a-lifetime choices that GMs bypass at their own risk.

The question is whether Luck is "that kind of player". Jury overall might still be out, but a fair number of draft guys think he may just be.

Did not know that.

I did :D

His dad quarterbacked WVU to its most successful season in a long time when I was in high school. He was a hero to me and my football buddies. My brother still considers him the best quarterback WVU ever had, even over Jeff Hostetler (who had a much more successful pro career).

First words out of my mouth the first time I heard the phrase 'quarterback Andrew Luck' were "Is he Oliver Luck's son?"

rayzor pretty much sums it up perfectly.

This isnt a knock against Clausen, its just Luck is special. You cant pass that up.

We tend to hear this a lot around this time about QB prospects the hype machine makes these players the next big thing before they even hit a NFL field..

People were saying the same thing about Jake Locker this time last year he was going to be the next Steve young..etc..I am not saying Luck is not a good QB he is a good QB just saying the "he is a rare elite player gets thrown around a lot"

I never thought Locker was as good as the hype, and I've heard plenty of questions about him (even last year).

Luck though? I've seen enough to be sold. Most of the NFL scouts looking at him need to wear bibs to deal with the drooling.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
