Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

Unfortunately, the GM simply makes the personnel moves. I still hold the coaching staff responsible for not developing some legitimate talent Hurney drafted like Colbert, Shelton and probably a couple others.

It's also not like Hurney does all the team's scouting by himself.

eh, i wouldn't say outstanding unless you're just counting the first round.

after that, he's pretty much average at best

Outside of the first round, he's selected Wharton, Marshall, Anderson, King, Kalil, Johnson, Rosario, Godfrey, Connor, Brown, Martin, Goodson, Fiametta, Schwartz, Munnerlyn, Clausen, LaFell, Hardy, and Gettis. Those are just the guys who are contributing on the current squad, fwiw.

Is it that hard for you guys to look something up before making inane comments?

I can live with Hurney's drafts.

Except for the reaches when he's given away future picks to selct a player.

A 1st, 2nd and 4th for Otah.

The 17th overall pick to select Brown 43rd.

And probably the 34th pick overall for Armanti Edwards.

Unforgivable.

Doesn't matter how he gets it done, as long as he gets it done. Right?

Two mid teen 1st round picks.

The 2nd pick in the second round and a mid 2nd pick.

And a 4th round pipck.

For Jeff Otah, Everett Brown and Armanti Edwards.

I want a lot more talent on the roster for all those picks, but that's just me. Two firsts, two seconds and a 4th. Unforgivable.

Google "draft mistakes" or "draft busts" and the name of any team. You'll get your fair share of results, even from teams considered to be solid at drafting.

The Eagles are perennial contenders, but how many teams have they whiffed drafting receivers?

Heck, in 2001, Freddie Mitchell was drafted five spots ahead of Reggie Wayne, eleven ahead of Chad Johnson.

contributing badly btw

not a lot of those guys should be starting and most of them are grossly unproven (gettis, goodson, fiametta) or rotational guys at best (Johnson, Hardy). Some are just downright awful (Schwartz)

If those were the only picks Hurney had ever made, you would have a point. But they're not.

He's had nine drafts here. In those drafts, he's gotten 33 players who've started for us, and many more backups. You're hung up on the decisions you didn't like, and not recognizing the ones that were better than you should expect (Wharton, Hangartner, Anderson, King, Johnson, Godfrey, Connor, Schwartz, Martin, Munnerlyn, LaFell, Hardy, Gettis).

On balance, he's done better than most teams. Go find a GM who has a better track record in the draft and get back to me.

9 drafts, maybe 70 plus players and countless free agents. I've already said I could live with his standard drafts, the reaches, no way. I'm entitled to my opinion, and no one can change it.

Those 2 firsts and 2 seconds, we should have 3 or 4 more Jon Beason and Ryan Kalil quality players on our roster.

Someone posted this a while back...

Forbes: Five Best and Worst Drafting Teams

Behind the Numbers

To find the NFL's best and worst teams at drafting, we looked at the last three years of drafts for all 32 NFL teams. To judge the success or failure of the drafting teams, we looked at the percentage of players from those three draft classes who were still listed as active members of the team.

We gave a little extra weight to players who had made the Associated Press' All-Pro first and second teams--the players deemed as that year's best at their respective positions. Membership in this elite group is difficult to crack for a young player, as many long-tenured veterans make the All-Pro team year after year based only on reputation (take the N.Y. Jets' Alan Faneca).

The lists would probably surprise you.

(FYI: we're not on either one)

Those rotational guys are playing on a 5th ranked passing defense (we should have added a couple DTs I guess). Our defense is ranked 11, which is astounding given the lopsided TOP they've had to deal with.

And the unproven guys haven't proven to stink either. They've all pretty much surpassed reasonable expectations. Reasonable outside the Huddle that is.

And Schwartz has been anything but awful. I didn't mention Bernadeau for a reason though...

I'm not saying they were good decisions. I'm saying that if you measure him solely by those decisions, it's not fair. Overall, he's done a great job. So what if he makes the occasional mistake. Doesn't the occasional great pick balance that out?

And it's funny that in the same post you inadvertently admit to his skill at finding rare talent when you bring in Kalil and Beason. :)

    • I have more faith in XL improving than I do in Tmac being a true number 1 recuever
    • Round 1. TMac arguably the best WR in the draft Round 2. Scour ton mentioned as a possible 1st round edge.     Texas A&M did not use him the same way Purdue did. After the 2023 season he was listed as a first round grade. I believe had Texas A&M used him like they did at Purdue he never makes it out of round 1. Round 3 Princely Umanmielen, we'll go by Princely.  Another highly graded player we got in a lower round. As the video suggests, even if he plays only on passing down it's a positive. Give him a couple of years to develop a he could be a three down player.  Round 4a Etienne IMO a huge upgrade over Blackshear. I can see him in a similar role as CMC without the heavy workload. He can run in between the tackles and has some shifty moves. Give Canales some flexibility. A fellow huddler pointed out UGA running backs don't see the field if they cannot pick up the blitz. Really good pick. Round 4b Ransom a hard hitting safety that has played three different positions on defense. Great pick Round 5a Cam Jackson a massive NT in round 5. I believe a solid rotational pick in a lower round. We added a beast that could make offenses quiver when he's lined up with Brown. Great Value  Round 5b Evans This is another player that can block and has good hands. He also had better seasons before 2024. As a rookie he's probably leaps and bounds better than Ian Thomas. I think he gives us a three headed monster at TE.  Round 6 Horn Jr. Many believe he's just going to be a KR/PR player. I believe there are going to be packages for him to get on the field as a WR. His speed with TMac and Thielen in the slot could be special. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in training camp. I've watched some film and he is very explosive.  Overall I love our picks. I honestly believe all of them will contribute this season. I don't believe we reached on one player in this draft.  This weekend we get a small look at these rookies
