Hurney brought in the players he was told to bring in.

He didn't control who was drafted nearly as much as Fox did (IMO).

Fox loves Jake like a damn son, of course he wasn't going to draft an early QB. I full believe his ass would be QB this season as well if it had been up to Fox.

You nailed the WR issue, but I wonder how much that falls into drafting priority as well.

Proves my point. The Best QB Hurney has brought in during his time with the Panthers is Delhomme.

That's a very sad statement, and a very weak bullet point on his QB evaluation resume.

Who should he have brought in, and when? I trust you're smart enough to refrain from the "He passed on Brady" type arguments.

From 2003 through 2006 We really didn't need another quarterback. Jake was perfect for our offense and we went to two NFC championships and a Super Bowl. At the ned of 2006 when Jake had some issues in an 8-8 season, Hurney did try and bring in Carr which many folks on this site lauded as a great move. I was not one of them. It was awful in 2007 when jake went down but even then he brought in Testeverde who was the best of who was left and they had already had Moore. Up until this year Moore was considered a find at 6-2 as a starter. Obviously we rolled the dice with Jake again in 2008 and until the playoff blowup were sitting at 12-4 and were favorites to win the NFC. And we all know about last year and this.

BUt if Clausen or Pike are the one and while it is too early to call it, early returns are ugly, then he will have actually done better than a lot of franchises over the past 8 years with a few really bad hiccups along the way. He has certainly tried to bring in the right guys but obviously it isn't as easy as many folks think. There are a lot of teams who have really struggled finding their franchise guy. Look at Chicago and what they gave up for Cutler who was a sure thing. How did that work out so far?? What about places like San Fran, Denver, etc. Even Miami just benched Henne in favor of Pennington this week so that situation is more unsettled.

We have had no high first round picks since 2002 so it isn't like we could pluck a guy like Atlanta did Ryan. If we do get a chance in this draft(and it looks like we might) to get a top notch guy, lets see if Hurney pulls the trigger or sticks with Clausen. We should have a better handle on that after 8 games.

don't dodge the question.

Do you mean to say that I am doing the same thing you cyborg are doing regarding my question?

Come on Skew, give us some names. :)

Okay, you convinced me. There is absolutely no one that was better than ANY of the QBs Hurney brought to Carolina.

A couple of draft picks (Rodgers, Flacco) that a lot of people whiffed on, a few WCO guys (Garcia, etc.), and a free agent who wasn't going to come here anyway (Brees). The rest are the Harringtons, Carrs, and McCowns of the NFL.

It's really hard to get a great QB without a very high draft pick.

If that's the case, then Fox and Hurney together can't evaluate QB or WR talent. Which is just more of a reason to say that if Fox goes, Hurney needs to as well.

I have no complaints when it comes to their ability to evaluate talent at all other positions. I think they both have done an excellent job in that sense. But as for QB & WR, they both suck, and the talent level we have had at those positions has been hurting us ever since the both of them arrived here in Carolina. The two of them have done nothing to improve these positions. Abet, Delomme was a slight improvement, but that being the pinnacle is truly sad.

    • If we don't go OT, we will regret it.  What bothers me?  Are we going to get a starting-caliber OT at 19?  I think the draft is solid at OT, and the more I read up and watch video, the more I watch Lomu, the more I want him.   I see Freeling as a RT who needs some work in run blocking (since we need to run first, maybe not a good fit) and I see Proctor ending up as a Guard.  After Lomu (assuming Mouigia and fanu are gone), I think we wait until round 2.  In round 2, there are about 3-4 I like (Zuhn--good pass blocker and VERY underrated right now; Tiernan is a very good pass blocker as is Miller from Clemson, but both are not good in the run game.  Max Ixxxxx from Ariz St is impressive too---technically, there is not a of difference in these second tier guys--good in pass pro, need work in the run game.   If we wait until round 2 for an OT, we probably need to sign Nijman and start him early.   I almost think this is what we should do if Lomu is gone.  There is a big dropoff after him, imo, and I think we'd get better value if a stud ILB or edge is there.  Someone like TJ Parker Clemson makes sense. If Lomu is gone, trading back might be the play.
    • And what is x gunna help with except show him what not to do. Plus for the first year and a half he was just an obstacle
    • I understand that some people want WR. I am solidly against using yet another high pick there. Coker is pretty good and we used No picks on him.  What I think we really need at WR is a little bit of a Smitty lite. It is ridiculous to say let’s get a Smitty because you just can’t do that, but someone not tall and long striding but more in his mold. I think we’d have a pretty well rounded group.    Looking at tackle, with replacing Moton looming, it just seems like the no brainer.  You fill in Icky short term. Depending on how he recovers, and how the new guy plays, you go from there. A tackle at 19 is most likely either a LOT, a ROT, or a big talented guard, at worst. We will need all three in the next couple of years.  I would love to have a stud ILB be there at 19 but the OL is the responsible thing to do I believe.
