Williams wants to stay in Carolina

Trying to be like the patriots is a mistake? What in the world are you talking about?

Trying to be like the Patriots when we are not the Patriots is a big mistake. They have one of the top organizations EVER. Yes, we should strive to be like that, but we are far from it. Belichick is one of the greatest coaches of all time. No one ever has been able to recognize talent like him. In order to win you have to be able to accept your weaknesses. Trying to trade players like Belichick, would be a big mistake because he is probably one of the few, if not only person that knows how to do this.

I like the Steelers mentality. Invest in franchise players and take care of them. Build you team around them through the draft. As a result, their players are loyal and want to be there so they are not every year worried about resigning players b/c their players want to stay there. People on this site would have released Hines Ward years ago.

We must do everything in our power to overpay a player thats finished the year on IR the past two years and has his replacement on the roster. Fans are silly.

You do realize we are a run first team. If our next coach wants to continue this philosophy, then yes we should pay him. If we become the Colts, then we will probably be fine with Goodson and Stewart because we will throw the ball a gazillion times.

For the record, I did not have any issue with a lot of the players that we let go in the past year. At the end of the day a player is worth what the market demands. I can assure you the market will pay DWill $6 million a year. How is this overpaying him? $6 million a year isn't even a top contract. It is a top 10 contract. So now you don't think DWill is a top 10 running back?

oh man, if one of your franchise players is a RB you have a poorly run franchise

try arguing the points I actually made instead of putting words in my mouth

And your little paragraph about the Steelers philosophy totally goes against your point of resigning a replaceable player and contradicts your entire argument, BTW

I'm not trying to defend jtm...but

It'd be nice to resign him if its not too steep of a cost. Like I said, its a win-win scenario if we can do this. Stewarts under contract to 2013, Sutton & Goodson are playing well, I see no problem here. If a team is willing to give us good compensation for Stewart, take it. But objective 1, re-sign Williams because regardless if you want to trade him or keep him, he needs to be tagged or re-signed to get compensation. Plus, his IR this year was from a 2-3 week injury, if anything he's rested and fresher than ever.

I'm just trying to stay positive here

Your points don't make any sense. All you have said is we should be like the Patriots and DWill is going to get overpaid. I came back and said we are not the Patriots and how is paying a RB what the market will bear overpaying him?

Of course they wouldn't have. They signed a 33 year old Hines Ward to a $5 million contract so he could finish his days as a Steeler.

So Hines Ward is to the Steelers as Deangelo Williams is to the Panthers?Really? Really???

I don't see it. Maybe Steve Smith or Kasay. That's it on our current roster.

Right now? Nope.

Arian Foster is having a 2008 DeAngelo Williams year. Is he a Top 5 back?

Question for you, jtm. What RB's in the NFL would you rather have right now over DWill?

Everyone is missing my point. To answer your question, no Arian Foster is not a top 5 back, neither is Hillis. If they have another year in 2011, then they would qualify for the discussion. My issue is people anointing Goodson after only a couple games as a very good RB.

    • Just as we won those close games we could have just as easily lost them. So the jury is out on if we were more lucky than good ( see the sweep by the saints) Were moving forward on paper. And how badly dont we all want to see us back to at least Above average form. Its about time.
    • If you're looking for a pat on the back it sounds good in theory until you realize they also had the 2023 Panthers as the top draft class.
    • Going into the 2003 and 2015 seasons we were supposed to be the joke of the league each time. In 2003, John Fox was supposed to still be in rebuild mode. We had a guy named Peppers on the defensive line who was supposed to be pretty good. We had Rodney Peete as our starting QB and a line that was a lot of hope and not much experience. Our new running back was a guy the Redskins, errrr Commanders, had jettisoned for being too old. We had a good kicker and writers thought that was needed because there were going to be more field goals than touch downs. Heck, it looked like they were right up until just before halftime of that first game when we had to yank Rodney Peete and put in some Cajun duded whose name couldn't be pronounced. And Steve Smith? He wasn't Smitty yet. Moose Muhammad, well, he was close to being written off as a bust. You know how that turned out. And then in 2015, we had Cam Newton, who was electrifying to watch but hadn't really won anything yet. There was an offensive line in front of him that looked like it was made in a defunct Swiss cheese factory and our big hope on offense was the great Kelvin Benjamin. And then he got taken out for the year with a knee injury in training camp. Ted "Feet of Lightning, Hands of Stone" Ginn became our default go to guy beside our next best hope, yeah, Devin Funchess. Our defense was pretty good, a scrappy bunch with frikkin' awesome linebacker play and a cornerback who had done more than drank the Kool-Aid, but had snorted the powder. He played like a superhero and became sort of a bat-man during the season. By the Super Bowl he had completely lost his freaking mind, though, and managed to talk his way out of a contract with the team next year. No one was expecting us to win the NFCSouth that season, much less almost go undefeated and into the Super Bowl. So, 2026? Who knows? But our best seasons came when no one had a reason to believe in us, except us.
