The Saints "dirty" defense...

my point is i'd gladly take a dirty defense that accomplishes something over what we have here. Gary Williams was a great signing and all they've done since they got him is win a super bowl.

NFL is a physical sport, trying to say one team is dirty is a bit of a stretch. All the good defenses get accused of this. No one accuses the defense that can't wrap up or rarely hit qbs as being dirty.

I'm all for being physical, but look at the video posted here. Driving straight at Smith's ankle when he is running a route and the QB is looking on the other side of the field, that't not defense. That's just dirty.

30 to 40 years ago cheap shots and dirty football were how football was played. In the 80s teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers played dirty and were revered for it.

Over the past 10 years in particular football has become more of a buisness and commodity and less of a sport. As such efforts are made to preserve the stars, make things entertaining, focus on offense and scoring, etc.

Gregg Williams by today's standards plays dirty and teaches his players to take cheap shots after the whistle and not worry about penalties if it takes out the other team's star player. Remember when Buddy Ryan put a bounty out on a player? There has always been violence in football and cheap shots were a big part of it. But they are also something which the current rash of fines is designed to curtail.

I had a random thought the other day. I remember during the saints superbowl run everybody was saying that they were a dirty team because they beat up Brett Favre in the playoffs. Greg Williams was classless piece of poo.

But didn't we do that to Donovan McNabb in 2003?

He went down and all that was needed was a touch but instead of that one of our guys dove right into his ribs. It was rucker, favors, or wallace I can't quite remember. It affected the torque behind his throws and eventually took him out of the game. It was one of the biggest stories of the game.

Just wondering what fans would think if Brett Farve fell and Will Smith dove into his ribs.

That's how he got the nickname McRibb.

Remember what we did to Culpepper and Sims? And McRibb again last season.

we had a top 10 defense last year without being dirty. in fact, it was better than the Saints Defense, we just had a lack of production at QB, which lead to a lack of offense (although not nearly as horrid as this year) Thanks to Mr. Cajun

yes but in 2010, Matt Moore (just look at his record!!) will lead the Panthers to the promised land!...oh wait, that didnt work so well.

Whats sad, is that people actually believed that...incredible really.

btw, this whole saints are dirty thing is so over hyped. I dont think other teams, give it a thought. Probably just Carolina and Vikings fans.

^^and again, it has NOTHING to do with defense. Guess that means you have no point to make. Typical

I have that game and have seen it a couple of times.. I think the main difference was even before the hit, the Iggles were doing nothing to get back into the game. They were already without a running back. Their receivers were dropping balls and McNabb was doing absolutely nothing to move the ball. They were already being outplayed. The difference between the Favre hits and this is that the Vikings were still in position to win despite them. I'm not saying it was ok on our end to take a cheap shot on an already injury prone QB, but even if they called a penalty on it, it wouldn't have changed the tide of the game.

show me one time when the Ravens have ever been called dirty. Show me one time that the Vikings of been called dirty. We could keep going down the list if you like. Are you saying that your retarded cousin is calling these teams dirty or the Associated Press? . . . cause there's a difference.

There was so much nonsense in this post that my "dumb fahk" meter hit a new high. Grats on that! Youre a fuggin coward and a disgrace to Panthers blue if you really mean what you just said.

Taking players out is beyond the intentions of what the sport is supposed to prove. It was NEVER intended that players should be taken out and thats why. . . THERE ARE RULES IN SPORTS. Because its not real battle, it's a test, if you will, of strategy and strength.

-neg to the mafuggin rep, bish

IMO taking out the other team's star player is admitting your defense isn't good enough to stop them.
