My wife used to be a social worker before she moved on to teaching. She got into that to try to prevent anybody else from going through what she did growing up -alcoholic Mother, abusive stepfathers, etc. The one thing that made her decision to change careers, even after getting her Masters in that particular field, was the people she was attempting to help were unwilling to do anything to change their situation. Every case she handled the people genuinely needed help, but were too content in their chaos and refused to try to make a better life. The moms cant handle her son/ daughter's behavior, but when outside help came in, and tried to lead them to something better, its like LiaG said, every excuse to not...
