I'm a college student from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.

I'm doing a research paper on whats considered to be the subculture "Panthers Fan"

What I am in need of is any information you guys can give me about you being a Panthers fan.

Habits, why you are a fan, rituals, preparing for gameday, football discussion.

ANYTHING you can tell me would be greatly appreciated, even starting up a conversation in this thread.

Thanks in advance for everyone who helps out.

My reasoning for being a Panthers fan--we had just come into the league, and I was in the midst of a particularly hellish time in high school. My needing to embrace something new, for better or worse, led me to embrace the Panthers in spite of the fact that Montana ain't exactly a hotbed for broadcasting their games.

I was, thus, quite pleased when we made the playoffs in '96. And, well...we're not discussing 01.

I chose the team, despite being on the other side of the country, for their being a defensively identity and the team colors. I just like black and blue.

...very complex, I know.

Never have been to Carolina, either state--closest I've been was Virginia/Washington, DC.

As far as my gameday traditions...I only really get superstitious with wearing certain jerseys.

That is to say, I wear Deangelo Williams' jersey until we start losing, and then I switch to Steve Smith. I've tried wearing other jerseys once in a great while, and we tend to get blown out. ...thus, DWill and Smitty tend to be my choices.

Depending on what I have going on on Gameday, I always at least follow the game online, and sometimes, I'll go to the local sports bar (the Press Box), and root for the guys there.

Given that it's largely an NFC North/Steelers bar, it's an...uncomfortable situation, sometimes.

Other than the jersey thing and my nearly weekly attendance at the Press Box, though, I don't have any real traditions on gameday.

lol sorry I'm not a sports fan I'm just trying to do my research paper and I need "field research" from people who are Panthers fans. My opinion on any matter doesn't account for anything. I just need some feedback on why Panther fans are Panther fans

I was 6 years old when the panthers played their first game, so I was raised a panther fan from a very young age.

I lived in Winston Salem when the team was formed. I was wearing Panthers gear before the team even played its first game. I was just a fan because my parents bought me Panthers stuff. ...What? I didn't have an opinion, I was like 5.

Then I moved to Virginia, and I continued to identify myself as a Panthers fan, even though I didn't really pay attention to football. God knows the last thing I wanted to do was be like those Redskins fans in the area. Whenever a Panthers game was on, I watched it, but truth be told I didn't give a rats ass about football.

Then I moved to Maryland. Still identifying myself as a Panthers fan. Still wearing Panthers gear. Still didn't care about football.

Then one year my orthodontist started a football pick'em pool. The prize was a basketball signed by the Wizards and floor seats to a game. So I payed attention. I decided to watch football so I could be competitive against the other buck-toothed freaks.

I guess it was my good fortune, or bad fortune, that the first game I ever watched, really watched was the Panthers big comeback victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Week 1 2003. The Panthers went to the Super Bowl that year. At the age of 14, I was hooked for life.

Since then I've been a die-hard fan. I never miss a game, I could probaly tell you what college every player on the roster or practice squad went to.

Of course that could be anyone's story. So here's where it's unique. My whole life, since I left NC, I've been the only Panthers fan I know. It's a small market team. Sometimes its rough being the only guy at the bar cheering for the Cats, especially at college. But as a result, whenever I see a Panthers fan, we instantly have a connection. If you're a Skins fan in DC, you fit in, but you blend in. You could sit alone and no one would notice you. But when you're in hostile territory, and you see another Panthers fan, you've got a best friend for the day. It's great in that way.

I've been a panther fan from the start. I've been with the team through the highs and lows and never second guessed my decision. Living in Or has been tough because I dont get to watch alot of games, but when i do im just as excited as any other panther fan. recently ive seen quite a few bandwagon fans at the UofO but i know when the poo hits the fan those fans will start to disapppear, but not me. (it could be that j stew is a god at uofo)

      I’ve turned from a staunch detractor to him now having my 100% support. 1. He turned the worst o line in the league in to a top 10 unit in 1 offseason. Incredible.  2. Contracts to Horn and Hubbard. Reward your ride or die homegrown talent. Neither contract was way out of line for market value.  3. All of the talent he has added are intelligent, high floor types who love competing.  4. He understands that an org lives and dies off of the draft. This was the very first draft that I can remember since… ever where the franchise didn’t make a boneheaded trade and/or waste a high pick on a project tweener. No. It was Tepper sitting by almost completely mum, watching Dan orchestrate Dan’s draft…. picking intelligent high floor dudes from big name schools who showed up to play every Saturday and loved competing. It just felt right.  5. He has shown no reservation in cutting bait on guys that he sees as not having what it takes. This is really big one. It’s what the good teams do. Without it, you get the ‘coach’s guys’. Complacency. Stagnation. All these dudes needs to watch their backs.  I see him building a young core who have displayed NFL level ability. For the first time in a really long time it feels like the captain of the ship actually knows what he is doing.

      Jake Guentzel was a pretty elite  player and he fit us very well. And we’ve only had two offensive elite forwards under Rod. That’s Jake and Miko. Sample size is pretty small and I feel like your arguments biased. We are going to get an elite player or two In the off-season, we can be the judge of that this time next year.

      Defense is overall bottom 5 without a doubt.  We literally do no have any depth on any position for the defense.  We are once again a couple of injuries away from being complete garbage again.   I assume next draft will be defense heavy.
