Clausen Poll .....

he isn't developing fast enough that we can afford to pass up on luck.

This statement defines the bottom line for me.

Although I feel that, Clausen has had a lot stacked against him this season, which came as a huge surprise to me and Im sure himself also. Until a new coaching staff comes in it would be impossible for me to look at this and point fingers.

Again, a lot of people said similar things about Charles Johnson and Stanley McClover as Rucker's replacements... and wanted us to draft Derrick Harvey... lol...

Much like that situation, our QB situation is way overblown... Maybe we bring Moore back... He and Clausen + a vet or even a later in the draft rookie will be all right so long as we fix the coordination and execution... some stability on the OL and a solid #1 WR won't hurt either...

huh? we should have stayed with mcclover? DE wasn't a need?

 if you think QB need is overblown. it's the most improtant position on the team and the biggest need we have. do you REALLY believe that clausen is good enough to be the franchise QB? or that moore could be? or do you just believe that QB isn't that big of deal and it really doesn't matter who you have back there?

No, we did the smart thing and signed Tyler Brayton, and let CJ and SM have a chance to develop... One made noise by barking.. the other is now considered all pro by some here...

I think QB is a big deal in that we've now kinda damaged Clausen a good bit by not knowing what we're doing on offense and putting him in the line of fire... I'd be happy to have Luck, Locker, or Newton, yet I'm not going to anoint one of them as the immediate starter/savior of the franchise should we get them... I'm pointing out that none of them are proven, and hinging the hopes of our franchise on a rookie QB, when we already have a pro-ready prospect, is a little short sighted...

In 2 more games the rookie reference will be gone as will all the excuses. Look at Skelton or Clausen for example, Skelton is playing his second game ever and first on the road. Clausen has started half a season and played in others. If Skelton looked even half as good as Clausen it would be a huge indictment of Clausen. And as for Fitzgerald or Breaston, at least Skelton is looking downfield and making throws. How many times yesterday did Clausen throw a 3 or 4 yard pass when he needed much more. Sure check downs are necessary at times but that is his game right now. When he should be throwing downfield he check downs to a back, when he needs to checkdown to a receiver on a blitz he takes a sack.

David Carr was careful with the ball as well and will be looking for work at the end of the season. The reality is that unless you can find the windows available in the pro game and are accurate enough to hit them with regularity, you won't be playing in the NFL as a quarterback. What people are most concerned about is that Clausen has shown little progress from week to week or from the beginning to the end of the season. Whether he plays well or poorly is totally dependent on how poor the opponent is. He has shown no ability to elevate his game or play better against decent teams.

I agree with what you are saying but there really is more to looking at one QB play and comparing him to another.

However this belief in him refusing to throw deep needs to be put into better light, Bradford has thrown just 1.7% more of his passes over 10 yards, whilst throwing 1.5% less over 20 yards.

Clausen

20+ yards - 8.8%

10-19 yards - 17.7%

Bradford (+1.7%)

20+ yards - 7.3%

10-19 yards - 20.9%

Matt Stafford 2009 (+6.7%)

20+ yards - 12.3%

10-19 yards - 20.9%

Colt McCoy (+9.8%)

20+ yards - 14.3%

10-19 yards - 21.8%

Mark Sanchez 2009 (+13%)

20+ yards - 13.1%

10-19 yards - 26.4%

Josh Freeman 2009 (+16.3%)

20+ yards - 13.3%

10-19 yards - 29.5%

Looking at it makes interesting reading. Jimmy does throw shorter more often but not to the degree would have you believe. It seems the entire 2009 class as a whole were give more aggressive play calling, or at least played more aggressive. Remember that Sanchez was on one of the most veteran laden teams since the Pats.

Now look at the pressure each faced for their total drop backs

Freeman 2009 - 36.6%

Bradford - 33.9%

Clausen - 33.5%

Stafford 2009 - 29.6%

McCoy - 28.9%

Sanchez 2009 - 24.2%

Other than Freeman who seems to be an anomaly throughout this, it seems pretty evident that the guys who threw longer more often faced the least pressure. With the level of pressure Jimmy faces would you rather he took more sacks (already 9.3% of drops backs), threw a risky pass under pressure, or check down allowing one of our skills players to try to make a play?

When not under pressure I am concerned about him, however games like Sunday show he is capable of doing it.

One thing to consider...

Jimmy has got absolutely no experience around him bar Smith and Gross. The next most experienced player is Ryan Kalil who is 25...

for his second start, Skelton showed a lot of basics that Clausen still hasn't shown. Skeleton looked to be ahead of Jimmy as far as the speed of the game and making different throws.

never said Skeleton was good. Just comparing his in his 2nd start to Jimmy....and he simply does some thing better than Clausen. All things considered, Skeleton looks further along than Clausen.

This is something we are just going to have to completely disagree on. Clausen attempted throws that Skelton didn't, however were cut out on occassion by pretty good DB play on the Cards. Skelton was also given an extra 14 passes, so he kinda had to throw to different spots and for different routes.

Now look back at the Browns game and tell me how different the two QBs looked. Clausen was slated for achieving nothing until junk time, which is pretty much what Skelton did, with 74 of his 196 yards coming on their TD drive. However you see this as Skelton looking promising? I still disagree with him 'standing tall' in the pocket, because all it allowed was us to generate pressure after pressure, which generated the fumble to set up our TD.

Finally, how do you think Skelton would fair with his confidence if he was promoted, then demoted, then promoted due to injury, then never given an ounce of belief from the coaching staff?

    • It's also worth noting that Cam himself said that he felt safer when running vs. sitting in the pocket because he could see the contact coming and could better prepare for it. A QB running the ball doesn't have to be a sledgehammer. He just has to be effective.
    • That Falcons game is about as good as it gets. Especially on the road. I know the Falcons defense was bad but he was cooking with Coker, an undrafted rookie get the bulk of the receptions. If your QB has 5 TDs and 0 turnovers he is playing like a top QB, yardage be damned. The big question for me is how consistently can be play the whole season?  I don’t expect a game like that every week, but I also don’t want to see any performances like the pre benching or that Cowboys game (which was bad post benching). Bryce’s best shot at being the guy is becoming a mini-Burrow who is about as consistent as you can get at the QB position.  The good news is this QB class should be a fun one. So hopefully Bryce becomes the guy, if not it’s a nice class to let DC pick his QB and they should come into a great situation with a good OL, RB, young talented WRs etc…
    • Bryce Young is far less risky with his body when he runs than Richardson and doesn’t take many unnecessary big hits. Was much more worried about injury when he had that abysmal OL his rookie season than I ever would be when he runs/scrambles. 500/10 seems like a fairly reasonable prediction considering he had 250/6 in 12 starts last season. Of course literally anybody CAN get hurt, it’s just that we were assured by many huddlers that it was a sure thing with Bryce Young that he wouldn’t make it to this point in his career without significant injuries.
