steve smith needs to apologize to the huddle

the one thing he did right tonight was not jumping up and down screaming after a catch for a three-yard completion.

yes, steve smith is an all-time great on the team. yes, he is fiery, emotional, and has provided sparks for this team time and time again.

but when your rookie quarterback isn't making completions, it's up to you to help him out. if the ball hits your hands, you haul it in and give him another set of downs to work with. time and again this season, steve smith - for whatever reason - has let those balls bounce out of his hands, incomplete.

i love agent 89 as much as the next guy but there really is no excuse anymore. if you're going to publicly call out your embattled QB, demand he apologize to the huddle, and scream at him when he doesn't get you the ball, you had damn well better catch it when it does come your way.

especially when it's an easy catch. smitty had several of those come his way tonight, and he dropped them.

this has all been said before, of course, but to me, tonight was a new low. i can never remember him dropping so many balls at so many inopportune times - certainly not after having made rained a quotable shitstorm on clausen.

dude owes some apologies, for acting like a complete ass if not for his performance.

steve smith has almost no trade value at this point. he might be worth a high pick, but nobody is going to give one out. he's passed the zenith of his career, he's had a few injuries the last couple years, his stats this year are pathetic and he's dropping catchable balls.

makes a lot more sense to keep him and utilize him here. stable QB play could still keep him productive, especially if gettis, lafell and whoever else we bring in step up and become consistent threats.

clausen, on the other hand...

He didn't "demand" Clausen apologize to the huddle. He just should Clausen "should" apologize to the offense instead of the defense.

valid, but trivial at this point. he made a huge public stink over it - the quotes were splashed all over sports sites and radio shows. unclassy, given how poorly he has played.

Of course. You can't demand Smith apologize to the huddle because he demanded Clausen to apologize when that's not what happened. I'm all about facts man :D

conceded. but the fact remains that smith has done absolutely NOTHING to help his rookie quarterback this year - he's verbally berated him for his shortcomings, and then consistently failed to follow through with his own end of the bargain when needed.

that demands an apology.

Completely irrelevant to me. I couldn't care less what Smith says to Clausen, nor do I care to speculate on what all I perceive Smith to have done for Pickles this season. If he does berate him, so what? Doesn't really change anything. It's all a giant sh*t-storm I'd love to forget once 2011 rolls around.

    • To be clear, I am not advocating for drafting a WR.  As for the OTs we have met with--I am not sure how or when or where and whether or not that even matters. I can say this about OL:  Those tackles would not play much (unless there is an injury and Fano is probably going to be a guard.  Lomu seems to have slipped a bit (based on the perspectives of crackheads who publish on the interweb or broadcast from their pods.) I like Lomu.  I like Proctor--I think he is the #1 OT but the weight (he was 390) scares me.  Imagine him with $10m in his bank account at the gas station when the 16-pack of Reeses Peanut Butter Cup is right below his fingertips at the counter.  NOOOO! Blake Miller might be the most practical option, to be honest. I watched his vidoes for several minutes (not to exceed 10 because my father played for the Gamecocks when I was born) and I was impressed.   At 19?  A bit rich, but we don't know what the GMs know.   Bryce's contract is another issue.  If they decide to give him a bag of money (suicide hotline 1-800-JUMP), they are going to have to part ways with some vet contracts.  Moton, Hunt, and Lewis come to mind.  Ickey could be gone too.  So....I assume we will have a starting center by next year...
    • My original post :  Yeah man we are in better shape than the bulk of the teams in the league.   There is no goal post moving.  We have a top 15 wr room.  We have an absolute stud and a high floor guy.  Not sure why you are disparaging our guys,  So now for the offense to be unlocked we need a speed guy playmaker, this is insanity
    • 1st round WR again. This will be so great.  Imagine if we had a QB worthy of all of this. It might be something.
