Thoughts on a new playoff rule...

it doesn't happen often, but i think it could be changed somehow so that it NEVER happens.

I am also still a little bitter that the cards took us out i 08 when there were teams better than them that didn't make the cut.

The cards had a winning record so I'm not bitter about that. I'm just bitter at how terrible Jake and the D played. To make it even worse we had that one score early to get our hopes up. So painful.

The system may not let the best teams in every time, I just don't think teams with a losing record should be allowed any special consideration. If all the other teams in the conference at at 7-9 or worse then they could get in.

the cards were 9-7 that year but so were the bucs and bears.

i've never thought about another wildcard, but I have thought about different playoff possibilities. mainly how it might look if the top 6 of the conference got in regardless of division. what tiebreakers might be used and other factors that would have to play in.

well if you get a winning record then I'm hands off. The division rule can come into play. I don't want to make divisions totally irrelevant.

If your division is so horrible that no team can get above .500, then there is no excuse for the division winner not to be at least at .500.

I think in a case where a team is so terrible that they can't get to .500 then the #7 team should be considered if they are over .500. The wildcard teams would all simply move up one spot.

It's the first time this has happened but they make rules for every possible outcome.

Hypothetically a 3-13 team could make the playoffs right?(not totally sure just adding things up in my head).

they said yesterday it's only the 3rd time since 1978...don't think that warrants a rule change!!!!

no it's not

unless they're counting the clusterfug 1982 strike season where two losing teams made the playoffs, mostly because they did a 16 team playoff tournament.

the bottom line is a losing team is hosting a playoff game, and two teams that are both 3 games better in the same conference are not eligible

If it was based on records no team from the NFC West would be in the playoffs.

that's what makes it so bad, it's astounding.

If you can get to .500 or better then good job, the NFL is tough. If you can't manage to be a winner after 16 games with 6 in the bag then you suck so bad the NFL should bar you from the playoffs.

The Buccaneers went 4-0 against the NFC West. 3-3 against the NFC South. The swept the Panthers in dominating fashion.

The NFC West saved the panthers from going 0-16. The NFC West threw the worst team in the league a bone.

Worst division in the league and the Seahawks couldn't put together 8 wins?

They need to win the superbowl now just to break .500 for the year. If they lose they will be 10-10.

The NFC West is one of the perennial jokes of the NFL and this year it finally happened. A loser made the playoffs. This is when it gets serious, I think teams are going to feel legitimately robbed. Behind closed doors I think this may come up a bit. It's so rare they'll probably just drop it.

I firmly believe in any given sunday, unless the seahawks win the superbowl would I change my opinion, because then they would break .500 and be a winner.

The whole idea behind playoffs is that it is a tournament of champions. They then compete until you're left with a single, overall champion. In that spirit, the division champions have to all be in. Plus, that's the only way that you can take away randomness of SOS by division. Adding a couple of wild cards allows for a little correction. If you want more correction, don't remove the division champions but add more wild cards.

Personally, I like it the way it is. Too many wild cards waters down the kool aid...see 90s NHL where all but two teams got in. There's nothing wrong with the occasional 10-6 teams not getting in. Both the Gints and the Bucs had very winnable games that they let get away. They can't blame anyone but themselves that they didn't get in.

Everyone is going to say this is a good idea until it happens to Carolina. I say hell no, it's not the seahawks fault they are in a crappy division, they did what they had to do to get here.

It's totally the Seahawk's fault. If their division is so crappy then how are they 7-9? If you can't win your division at .500 or better then you're the division loser. So you shouldn't get the special privilege of a winner.

It's not like it's a bunch of powerhouses beating up on eachother. That division is a joke.

It was a fun game to watch but the Giants/Bucs deserved it more.

I need to shut up now.

It isn't the Seahawk's fault no team in their division could do better than 7-9. You can say the Giants/Bucs get punished cause they are in a tough division but if you take the Seahawk's out of the playoffs then you are punishing them for being in a weak division. Either way you have people who will say it isn't fair.
