Everette Brown (and Mike Goodson) - Worth the first?

Of course, you're right. Everette Brown was worth every bit of that first rounder. Keep believing.

Where did I say that?! No where in this thread have I stated what I think of the trade and as others have pointed out, the other DEs in the class have not exactly performed either.

I was just pointing out to those interested in discussion and formulating non biased opinions of the facts, NOT your close minded thoughts.

You were wrong about him being primarily a third down player and automatically get defensive when proven wrong.

I wasn't "proven wrong." The guy is primarily a third down situational pass rusher and 4th downer. He got some added playing time this year when Brayton moved into the middle or he was paired up with Charles Johnson.

And I was just pointing out to those interested in discussion and formulating non-biased opinions (which is actually an oxymoron: non-biased opinion) that Everette Brown and Goodson both need to be starting and full time contributing players if they are to live up to a first or second round pick. It's a pretty simple concept, really.

brown would have gotten more snaps this year if brayton hadn't been around. fox was going to go with vets where ever he could.

i don't mind brown being a situational player providing he improves this coming year. i think he improved from last year for sure. i believe hardy will probably have the start over brown, but brown as a pass rusher will be fine, esp. when compared to other DEs taken so early. having goodson as part of the package makes it a bit more worthwhile.

that said, i'm still not sure that we would have been better off keeping that pick and using it last year, but that probably would just mean that we would have drafted clausen in the first round instead of second.

It usually takes DEs 2-3 years to get it. Besides, there are some rookies and 3-4 DEs on this list too. I am not that worried about Brown, but I see him as a situational rusher when Hardy learns to stop the run better. Not worried about our DEs.

You know, not only should some people stop evaluating rookies after their first year as if they're in their last year of their careers, but especially Panther fans with what just took place this past year.

I gotta better idea. Wipe the slots clean, and rate them at the end of their second year. That should be a rule of thumb for ALL rookies. Period.

I can't believe we're so ready to pass judgment. First year comparisons are worthless unless we compare them to other rookies, and even then they are HIGHLY situational and their performance has mostly to do with the teams they landed on. These guys have barely gotten their feet wet, and if you pull them by their ears your fingers will turn green.

    • In all honesty, no one knows if Dan really pushed for Bryce to be drafted. It's not fair to Dan to say that just because he was a part of the Fitterer regime then he was in full support of drafting Bryce. If the HC, Reich at the time really wanted Stroud but got bullied into drafting Bryce then Dan had even less say so in the matter. Dan was also saddled with giving Bryce an opportunity to compete in years 2/3 because of the cost to trade up and get him by ownership.  Outside of managing the QB position, Dan has made good moves and built a decent roster. Solidified the O-line and D-line, drafted contributors, and made good trades (Mike Jackson), and free agent signings (Dowdle). I do believe that this offseason will be really important for Dan and we'll see whose side he is clearly on. Bryce has had plenty of time and opportunity to prove himself and he has failed, if Dan is a Bryce homer he'll give him another year and pick up the 5th year option. If Dan isn't a Bryce homer, he'll move on from Bryce. Either way, we'll find out this offseason.
    • You also have to extend him and probably deal/cut Bryce
    • Jones would be what he is if he was on this team, a fairly middle of the road game manager. Still and upgrade but probably not worth the price the 49ers may want for him. If it's not something stupid in terms of ask and he doesn't want something even more stupid in terms of longish term contract, I am okay with a middling game manager until we can do better through the draft. The one thing that wouldn't be terrible is some stability at QB. That has almost never happened under Tepper.
