Free Agent Flashback-why we should trade down

So was anyone really excited in Summer 2003 when they heard we signed some back up Qb to back up Rodney Peete? The rest, as they say is history. A guy who rode the pine behind Aaaron Brooks and Jeff Blake came in and took us to the Super Bowl and a couple NFC championships. We had a stud Rb, good OL, really good defense, and this cajun guy noone had heard of.

My point, Luck, or anyone else was not taking us anywhere unless the rest of the team improved greatly. We don't have to have Andrew Luck if we have a decent Qb, but trade a running back , get some more draft picks, trade down from #1, and build a dominant O-Line, add onto the D-line with a couple studs, and *****an offensive coordinator that knows how to utilize what we have. Someone who can get the ball to our stud rbs and Smitty in a creative way. With the stud rbs we have and promising young receivers, keep Smitty and make him happy by feeding him, a good off coordinator could do much more with what we have. Also , a defensive mind that don't play this bend dont break crap. That is why I would much rather have Rivera than Fewell.

That said, I am not sure Jimmy is our guy , but maybe a free agent to manage things. Is there another guy like Delhomme that could thrive given the chance?

ugh. that won't work anymore. keep dreaming, though.

Fixing the majority of our problems in all areas won't work? Since when? It better, cause that's our only chance and that's what every team in the NFL does.

He's right and I have been saying it all along. Even if we took Andrew Luck, it would have not made a big difference without taking care of the rest of our problems. Drafting any other QB now won't make a difference at all. We need to make a number of moves in succession in order to right the ship, not just one.

we'll spend forever hoping that we get everything just right for our turn at a franchise QB, but never get around to it because everything isn't perfect. sorry. not a recipe for success. get the right guy in and build things around him.

we didn't win the super bowl that year...

the pats did. they have a franchise QB and 3 rings to go along with him.

colts have a franchise qb and a ring

the saints have a franchise qb and a ring

the steelers have a franchise QB and 2 rings

hmm i think there might be a pattern here...

Get something through your heads. Without Andrew Luck there is NO ONE close to possibly filling that role. The rest of the guys are the equivalent of your Jimmy Clausen-like project QB.

We have no choice anymore. Yes, we need a franchise QB. He no longer exists in the draft, and at least at the moment, he doesn't appear to be available in the FA.

"Reliable and just solid", is the best we can hope for now.

Exactly.......And a new coaching regime, and from the sounds of it Jerry, have no intentions of tanking the season next year to get the franchise Qb. They want to win now. Yeah it will be great when all the stars line up right and we get our Paytonesque, Bradyesque Qb, but until then we have to build a TEAM.

Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Josh Freeman

Three reasons we won't come close to a playoff spot. Its a QB league, we don't have one. We can't compete with those three teams in the NFC south.

we won't compete until we have one.

"reliable and solid" translates into "hopefully better than average" and still ends up with us being 4th in the division.

We more than competed with the likes of Delhomme at QB. A franchise QB just makes it a hell of a lot easier.

You know you're right! Let's just give up. We stand no chance.....

What's wrong with y'all? The 03 Panthers were nobodies until after we made the Superbowl run. Anything can happen on any given Sunday and the right coach with the right attitude and a team with the right mindset can go a long freaking way. The 82 Dolphins were a bunch of nobodies that still hold the current record as the only undefeated team with a perfect season. No individual stars there! They were ALL freaking stars. The TEAM was the star.

And as long as the NFL continues to be a team sport, we stand as much a chance as anyone else every year. We need to do the best we can to fix our holes and play some freaking football! And STOP BITCHING!

You wanna know our biggest problem? OUR ATTITUDE f**kING SUCKS, as a fan base. The team at least kept their heads up all year long. You can be an all-star filled team like the Cowboys and freaking tank like bricks if you don't have the right mindset and team mentality.

Seriously, people have lost sight of what makes a GOOD football TEAM! You know, a supportive fan base that believes in them goes a long way too and lately we have been seriously disrespectful to the other 53 guys on the roster when all we keep talking about is the freaking next QB and how this team is nothing without that ONE guy!

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
