Who should we draft with the #1 pick?

Too early to tell. I expect in the course of the next few months, the prospects will begin to separate though. I will be surprised if there isn't a player or two who elevate as the apparent best players in the draft by April.

I am in favor of drafting the BPA. Five years from now what is going to be relevant is not the construction of our 2010 roster, but that we selected the greatest player. If we pass on a greater talent for a player at a specific position, that is the kind of decision that can haunt a franchise. This team isn't a player away from competing. There is time, and the resources, to construct a well balanced team. A team is rarely in a position so adept as the first overall at acquiring an elite talent though.

I really think Green is the BPA. I saw Peterson play last night and he didn't look like 1st overall material. Fairley & Newton won't be considered for character concerns and Gabbert just isn't that good. Bowers is a great player, but DE's are risky this high.

A.J. Green is pretty damn close to Calvin Johnson as a prospect. Even IF Smith sticks around we're eventually going to need to find his replacement and Green is that kind of player. We lucked out last year and got our future #2 in Gettis and another solid option in LaFell, but Green would make them both more dangerous.

Think ahead; Smith won't be re-signed in 2 years even IF he stays this year. We can take a chance on finding his replacement then, but why bother when we have Green in the palm of our hands right now? Plus it allows us to trade Smith now and get something for him, even if it's just a 4th rounder it's SOMETHING.

Green has to be the pick. He makes absolutely the most sense here.

At this point Green looks like a great option. If Green is the player he is said to be, and the team passes because of Steve Smith, that will be a decision that will hurt for the next decade. This draft has to be conducted with the future in mind. Where can AJ Green be in 5 years compared to Steve Smith is the question.

I didn't see the trade down option, that would be my plan A. Highly unlikely though imo, so I went BPA for Peterson. Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised that Green is leading over Fairley. BPA baby, even if you don't like it, it's how the panthers draft.

I agree with you to a point. If Clausen can't hit a wide open David Gettis (or any WR for that matte) how is the situation going to change with a wide open AJ Green? However I do think trading down and grabbing AJ green is the way to go. We need someone to replace Smith in the future. And the fact that no other QB in the draft is 'guaranteed' to be an improvement over Clausen (not a Clausen fan btw). Luck was a guaranteed improvement. IMHO I think Clausen will improve next season, he will have a healthy O-Line, great running game, some good receivers with great potential coming along with him. And if Smith gets traded, we almost certainly have to grab AJ Green.

They will either draft a QB or get a vet. Clausen will not be our only option this year. You can bank on that.

AJ Green or Patrick Peterson. DE and DT are not high value enough positions. Fairley is NOT SUH. Bowers is not PEPPERS. Green and Peterson could be number 1 WR or Shutdown Corner. Both valuable positions. We have seen the last of Marshall he will be overpaid somewhere else. And Smith burnt some bridges this season. I say draft AJ Green and trade Smith.

    • One thing about it, he's not thinking about retiring. I found it odd that some Huddlers were taking rumors and running with them, imagining a slow down and "up-playing" injuries. Moton feels great and is still in his prime according to him, and his game is still indicative of his thoughts.  Sure, it may ultimately come down to economics, but I am sure that everyone involved is motivated to keep him in Charlotte.
    • I think the knee stuff with Moton has been blown way out of proportion. The exact quote was “It’s chronic stuff. Most linemen deal with it. But it’s just figuring out what we can do to make sure it’s limited and I’m still able to explode off it, which right now I can and I feel like I can in the future,” After a while, you start learning more about it and what can we do to make sure it’s as little of an issue as possible. I feel like I’m moving like I was when I was younger.” I don't view that as a guy who's saying his knees are on their last leg I see that as a 10-year NFL olineman saying that obviously after 10 years of playing a really physical sport, he's never truly gonna be 100% healthy again and he's gonna need to spend more time with the training staff to ensure his body can continue to perform at a high level. I think Moton has another 3 to 5 years left if he wants to continue playing.
    • So much crying. Tiresome. All of you should have had enough time to come to terms with the team picking up his 5th year...
