Missouri Fans perspective on Gabbert

biggest knock on gabbert to me is his pocket awareness. it is HORRIBLE from the film on him that I have seen. he has no feel for the rush and bails easily, just like #2 on our team (I am no longer going to call clausen by his name, but by his number because he doesn't deserve name recognition from me).

that's far from being a fact.

now they should look at him just to cover all their bases, but i really don't see him as being impressive enough to do the job here. i don't doubt that someone will bite early for this guy, but all of these draftniks you read talking him up have made tons of boneheaded projections before and this will just be another one.

there are just too many negatives that people are overlooking out of desperation to have a top rated QB. only reason that he is ranked so high is because people have had more time to pick apart the other QBs in the class.

many people are liking this guy just because of what a couple draftniks have said and many of them say the exact same things about him, like they are all reading from the same script. very few people are making up their own minds about him, but this isn't much of anything new. many times draftniks and wannabe draftniks will end up jumping on players bandwagons mainly going on what other have said about him.

some people just liked the guys potential coming into college (just like they did clausen) and that hype stayed with him to an extent. they were willing to overlook his inadequacies as a passer. they saw what they wanted to see and when he said he was going to enter the draft they just stayed right on his bandwagon. for some reason they saw his bowl game as being impressive. i didn't, but whatever. they have blamed the team and the system for his shortcomings, much like clausen fans are doing now.

the size and system he is coming from may be different from clausen, but i really feel the results will be the same. he isn't confident in the pocket...at the college level. he can't handle the pressure and allows it to cause him to make very bad mistakes. this isn't going to get any easier in the pros and it isn't something that can be coached into him. he's going to get rattled and he is going to make bad mistakes. he is also just way too limited. not just playing in a spread, but his blinders for the right side of the field....of course this has all been said over and over.

you can buy the undeserved hype this guy has surrounding him. i don't care. i just hope the panthers don't bite because they will be regretting it.

Preach on brotha!

Can you teach a feel for pressure?

what other QBs coming out of college had questions about their pocket awareness and ended up doing very well in the NFL? this is not a hypothetical question, i am legitimately interested to see if that is a big factor in determining success at the next level.

Bradford and Gabbert had similar ways of dealing with pressure: They both bailed on the pocket when they had pressure, often to the right. Here's what ESPN said about Bradford's pocket mobility:

His foot quickness is adequate and he shows the ability to throw accurately on the run. Has a tendency to bail out to his right when pressure comes, which is something NFL pass rushers will exploit until he corrects the problem. Is not used to being under consistent pressure. Has shown flashes of being able to sidestep the interior rush and stepping up to avoid the edge rush. However, he occasionally will fail to feel the rush. His mental clock needs to speed up in the NFL.

Compare this with Gabbert:

Possesses good foot quickness and above-average agility for size. Does a nice job of sliding to find passing lanes. Will keep eyes downfield when rush avoiding. However, needs to do a better job of stepping up in the pocket when feeling edge pressure. Can be tough to bring down for sack and shows ability to ward off defenders and keep play alive. Does a nice job of extending play when breaking contain and throws accurately on the run to both sides. Has enough speed to pick up first-down yardage with his feet.

For reference, here's Stafford:

Much better athlete than anticipated. We were really surprised by his foot quickness and scrambling ability when studying him on film. He does an adequate job of avoiding the rush. Will buy extra time with his feet. Is capable of tucking the ball and running for the first down. We did notice, however, that the vast majority of his scrambles are to the right side, where he is far more comfortable throwing on the run. He does a fine job of squaring his shoulders and throwing with velocity/accuracy while on the move.

annd Sanchez:

Very good pocket presence. Really improved in this area as a junior. Displays quick feet. Gets set quickly and shows agility to avoid the initial rush. Will step up in the pocket and also shows the foot speed to out-run the rush to the perimeter. Is a better athlete than appeared most of junior season, when he was battling a lingering knee injury.

Do you want me to check on anyone else? As you can see, the pocket awareness on top draft picks is not always super high, and it being super high is not a requisite of being taken #1.

Eh. People disagree. I just don't see what some posters here do. Others just focus on things different than I do about a player's game.

I like his size, mobility, awareness, arm strength, intangibles, accuracy, smarts (including decision making)... He needs to work on pocket awareness and decisions while he's out of the pocket, but he's a smart kid and I would be surprised if he didn't succeed at the NFL level, regardless of where he falls.

As I watch more and more videos of him, his accuracy is downright horrible. I don't see how that is listed as one of his strengths by multiple people. I haven't seen every game of the season or anything, but I've watched 10+ minute videos of 3 or 4 games from this past year (as well as the shorter highlight clips) and his accuracy is just terrible. He was almost always overthrowing the receiver or throwing it way to the left or right. I guess he wasn't underthrowing much, like Clausen, so that's a plus. He does seem to have a strong enough arm. He also squats sometimes when he throws (like Clausen) but since he is taller it shouldn't be AS big a problem. Like I said before I wouldn't be too upset if we trade down half a round to grab him, I do like his size/arm strength/mobility, but I'd be pissed if we took him at #1. I'd rather Bowers at #1 and we don't really need him...
