We need a right guard

Schwartz looked good at RG this year. It wasn't until we moved him to that position that our running game really took off.

If Duke comes back and is better, that will be great. But even if he doesn't, a line of Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Schwartz, and Otah will be among the best in the NFC.

If we had our 33rd pick we could have potentially had Mike Pouncey. He is projected to be almost as good as his twin brother Maurkice who has started from day one and will be starting as a rookie today at center for the Steelers.

If Duke fails again and if we don't bring in a FA, my dream OL for 2011 would be:

Gross-Wharton-Kalil-Pouncey-Otah

Last preseason I was so excited for a Robinson-Otah right side to emerge. The potential is there to be dominant as hell. Those two just need to make the choice to frickin play.

So what is your issue with Schwartz?

My only gripe with Schwartz is I just think he has slow feet. He's kind of a clod hopper. That limits his versatility if our offense becomes more creative. He is not really the type of guy that can pull to the opposite side and lead a play downfield. The size is great and Otah+Schwartz would be great for face-to-face, man up big-on-big run plays. But HOPEFULLY our new scheme will feature more creativity from time to time.

For 300+ pound men they sure do need some toughness. Otah seems to limp at the first twinge and Robinson needs to grow a pair. Must be all those damn steriod shrunk his pair to oblivion.

One word was used to describe both of these men in their draft preview and that word was BEAST.

Would love to see the BEAST side come out of them and play football.

You do realise he was our most effective down field blocker yeah?

Also, how often do you pull RG's across to the left? I was under the impression your LG was the pulling guard as the RG almost always has someone directly over him. Plays requiring pulls to the left are usually lead by the LT & LG, with the C, RG & RT picking up the then unblocked DLine. That's just what I have observed though.

I personally felt the RG was supposed to be the mauler who gets to the second level, which is exactly what Schwartz is.

I played RG in college and pulled a ton. The LG, RG, and even our center pulled almost evenly. Who knows what our new offense is going to look like. I would just like a guy that offers a little more versatility. I'm not a Schwartz hater by any means.

I was actually surprised at how well Schwartz did at RG this year, pretty much for the reasons you gave. I just didn't think he would be even decent switching mid-year after playing RT pretty much his entire life. But I'm still not sure if he will be starter material or not once he gets an entire offseason and camp to work on the position. I always felt RG would end up being his best position, but I just don't know if it is as a starter or back-up.

I did find it interesting, though, when Beason said on WFNZ the other day (when talking about the offense's problems, and OL in particular), that one problem was that we were missing the right side of the line, then specifically mentioned Otah and Duke. Don't know if it means anything, I just found it interesting that he seemed to view Duke as our starting RG.

As for Bernadeau, I think we learned he is not a RG. I believe he is fine depth at LG, but doesn't have the power for RG...or at least in the previous regime's scheme.

Good to hear about Duke. If he comes around, we could be set. I find it interesting that he was not cut after his unfortunate screw up, so maybe the Panthers think there is still something there. I agree with the rest. And who is our backup center-_Bernadeau? Scary.

My concerns about the OL? Depth at T and C. My only concern about Gross is his age, but he has 2 years left at LT. It would be a good time to draft someone later in the draft whose stock is down due to technique, not talent--a diamond in the rough. Coach him up for 2 years so you don't have to use the #1 pick in 2013 or 2014 on a LT. That is how you build through the draft--not by trading first rounders for second rounders and second rounders for third rounders. There are a few LOTs in the draft who have the raw talent, but they are rough--waist benders, footwork issues, etc. Get one and coach him up. We then have depth at T (eventually) and possibly the next LT. Same system should apply to QB.

I think you are basically looking for the perfect OG, which really isn't going to happen. Either we have a great down field blocker who excels in pass blocking with Schwartz, or we get a small more nimble OG who is great at pulling and is decent at pass blocking.

The guys who excel at everything very rarely come along.

My only issue with that is that technically we have Schwartz, Otah & Gross at OT. Drafting another OT is basically meaning he won't make the roster. Obviously if they move Schwartz inside permanently then it's a non-issue. However Schwartz is very good at RT as well, so if Otah goes down I want him out there over anyone else...

My top 5 concerns about the OFFENSIVE LINE:

1. Re-signing Kalil

2. Otah's health

3. Depth at LT

4. Depth at RT

5. RG

Schwartz was pretty good last year after adjusting. With Duke on the roster, we aren't bad there. Re-signing Kalil is going to be tricky. If Gross goes down, are we going to move Wharton there again, getting weaker at 2 positions on the left side?

If we could trade back for the Pats 2 1sts (just making conversation doubt it would happen) we could get Locker and then maybe Pouncey would be around when the 2nd 1st comes around. That would be awesome as Pouncey is almost as sure of a thing as it comes in this draft. He also could play center if Kalil was to go down.
