Panthers begin background work on Fairley

Forget it bro, these guys just don't get it. Year after year, people look at the draft through our positional needs, when we are clearly a BPA team. At this point I've given up on trying to explain this simple fact to them.

Sorry if this comes off as sarcastic, but when you have the #1 overall pick how is it by simply drafting a guy not going BPA unless you reach down the board?

Stricter QB rules are only a few years old. Hits below the knee on the QB is like two year-old ban and ONLY because it sidelined Tom Brady. Had it been Joe Smoe at QB, that type of tackle still is leagal today.

Maybe but again, the rules are in place. Nothing can be done about them. And Fairley has to follow them just like everybody else.

Okay, I'm sure he will. Since that rule has been in place, it's drawn quite a few penalties. I doubt the defensive guys that drew those fouls are lumped in as dirty players. Our guys have drawn PF before and I don't think any of them are dirty players.

Fairley is aggresive and that's good, he's just got to check up sometimes and with good coaching at the next level I think that'll happen.

The big board on ESPN doesn't mean jack. Peterson and Green are simply better candidates than Fairley is. No one is disputing Fairley's dominance in college btw, but the way he gets it done just won't fly in the NFL. He has many weaknesses as a prospect and hence, he isn't the best player available, especially when you compare him to the 2 I've mentioned. The only reason his draft stock has risen is because of his performance at the bowl game, and truthfully, that game didn't tell us anything we didn't know about Fairley previously.

I never said it the hit in the back wasn't a foul. I just said how did you know HE knew the ball was gone. It was a foul, but not a spear in the calssic sense of the term; he never left his feet.

While I may be bleating my heart out, you obviously are a bleeding heart and don't care where the game came from.

You still fail to recongnize Fairley gets to the QB. That's the sad part.

this is key right here.

so what if he racks up some fines and a few penalty yards. he's going to get in the QB's head and that will more than make up for it. also, teams are going to have to scheme against him and work extra hard to protect their QB. that only opens up others invovled in the pass rush. we need that kind of push and aggressiveness from the interior.

everyone in the trenches are supposed to be mean and nasty players. the more aggressive and destructive, the better.

It's not just ESPN that says Fairley is the #1 rated guy, BTW. My point was regarding your previous post is it's hard not to take the BPA sitting on the first pick. NOW, whether that pick is a fit for your team is where the nuance comes in. Sitting at #1 overall any of the top 2-3 picks are the BPA, especially this draft and need IS paramount when the can select anyone you want.

Our present offense + a 3rd round offensive player is going to lead to 0-16. I can only hope that if we take Fairley, then we also make big moves in FA to upgrade the offense. The Falcons, Bucs, and Saints will eat us alive otherwise.

What huge offensive needs? We all know a yet to be detemined veteran QB is coming in--done, no even going further.

So are we cutting Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Otah, Williams, Stewart, Goodson, Smitty, Gettis, Lafell, Rosario, King, Barnidge and Fiammetta?

Where is this huge need everybody keeps talking about? The blight at Right guard?

I'm not getting it.

Hint: Fox and Davidson are gone will ALONE improve the offense.

Ok we'll assume we're bringing in a very good FA QB.

What else you ask? We have two gigantic offensive linemen who were injured last season, Duke Robinson and Jeff Otah. It's nice to assume that they will be back next season, and won't have more lower body injuries next season due to their size. I'm not willing to make that assumption. I'd like to bring in a vet FA OT to back up both Otah and Robinson, assuming Robinson starts at RG.

We also need a proven TE who can both block, and be a major threat in the passing game.

Steve Smith is our only veteran WR, and he's not much of a leader or a mentor. He has a bad attitude, and he's lost a step. We need another proven veteran WR, similar to Ricky Proehl.

That's what I mean by major moves in FA.

I'm with ya on FAs, but that's not how Richardson operates. Round one and three are not backup lineman rounds, that's the later rounds and I'm not sold that Roario and Barnidge can't be very good TEs. Why? Hardly utialized under Fox. Yeah King's best attribute is blocking and not catching. He may go. As far as Gettis and Lafell...even Edwards, committment to the young players is JRs mantra. Hang up any idea of some big name, older FA WRs coming in like Braylon Edwards.

Again that leaves us at right guard?
