Hurney: QB is Carolina Panthers' 'No. 1 need'

Clearly the worse year to need a QB. Never liked Jimmy, probably never will and the free agents out there aren't much better. Either way, whoever it is can't do worse then Clausen did. If they let Armanti Edwards run back yard football plays I bet they still would do better then 2-14. I wish the draft would hurry up....I can't take the waiting game

yep and necessary throws are what set him apart from Jimmy, just look at how good he is at throwing necessary downfield passes

So what you are saying is he gets hurt and had a bad half of football as your basis for not wanting him?

It won't be hard to find more videos of good throws he's made than bad.

Also, in the pursuit of facts, he didn't break his leg on his own. He broke it in the game then tried to practice the following week where it completely broke during drills.

A lot of hatred from you towards Moore for no reason really.

yea... that's the main problem with this draft is that there's probably no QB worth it

so then plan b would be to get some weapons on offense. lets put a good oline in front of Clausen, add some weapons (AJ Green, every down TE *Zach Miller*) retain our backfield (Williams) and see how he does with that kind of supporting cast next year.

ideally what they should and what i hope they do is forget trying to bring in some ancient stop gap QB like bulger of that old scrub career backup in san diego and get someone who can actually compete for the job long term. i don't want a stop gap while we wait around a couple years to see if clausen (or the 10' tall string bean w/ a noodle arm from cincy) can turn into something. thats a waste of time, imo. get someone who has potential to be a franchise QB and let him fight it out with clausen.

meanwhile, we give the QB as many viable weapons as possible. we keep all the RBs just to make sure that part of the game remains solid and we add more talented receivers. we can't count on smith long term. we can't count on gettis or lafell not turning into keary colbert part2. get the second coming of antonio gates in here. and make it as easy for the QB to succeed as possible and take away all excuses for failure. of course that also means fixing that right side of the oline (or getting it healthy).

He would get busted up and we would end up going back 2 clausen anyway Please stop using Armanti as a QB option. I bet he doesn't make it 2 full games at QB.

My only point in bringing up Edwards was he couldn't do any worse the Clausen. Thats how bad He looked last year.

There is a reason why Armanti wasn't considered a QB by Division I colleges, and there is an even bigger reason why he won't be considered a QB in the NFL. He's a nice gimic, but his ceiling is much higher at WR than QB.

Oh, look, another thread about QB's, and another thread where we find TRD talking about Matt Moore.

in his defense, this thread talks about virtually everything having to do with quarterbacks and the Panthers... including Armanti Edwards.

plus the fact is Moore is going to be on the Panther's radar if not their roster... now they may not bother picking him up but the coaching staff will look at every FA QB that they can, and that does include him.

TheRealDeal, koolkatluke and Raging Bull: You guys have straight up argued about nothing for 2 days. Give it a rest. Who cares about Matt Moore? At best he'll be a nod for back up next year. He's had his chance to shine and he sucked like everybody else we've put on the field. Get over it already.

Great post. Seriously. There was tons of insight and new ideas brought forward that none of us had seriously considered before. You gave us some new insight into who the QB next year for our team would be and also showed us why that would lead this team to get better.

If I had a vote for post of the day, yours would be it.

You guys weren't offering insight at all yourselves. Just going back and forth about stuff that won't even matter because Moore won't be a factor next season unless we can't find a starter. Then he'll have to battle for the top spot with Jimmy Clausen. Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds? He'll have to battle it out with Clausen. Sort of gives you an indication of how good of a QB he is. It's time to move on. The whole organization knows it and it's about time that you did too.

Edit: Thanks for the nod of Post of the Day.

    • Here’s a summary of the JJ and Luke podcast transcript. Opening / Bryce Young Fifth-Year Option     •    JJ: Breaking news — Panthers picked up Bryce Young’s fifth-year option at $25.9M, guaranteed, coming in 2027. Combined with his 2025 salary of ~$6M, that’s $31M over two years — called it a “no-brainer.”     •    Luke: Enthusiastic about the move. Highlighted Bryce’s improving TD/INT ratios (11/10 → 15/9 → 23/11) and the value of entering year three with Dave Canales. Noted $25M is a bargain relative to the $60M top of market. Luke’s Personal Update — Charlotte Christian Football     •    Luke: Working with Charlotte Christian school football program, which hired a new head coach. Coaches include Greg Olsen, Luke, and Greg’s dad Chris Olsen (a New Jersey State coaching Hall of Famer).     •    JJ: Jokingly quipped that Charlotte Christian’s coaching staff is “the world’s greatest” — a Fox analyst, a Hall of Famer, and the best Panthers RB ever — all coaching middle school football.     •    Luke: Praised Chris Olsen’s deep football knowledge spanning decades and his ability to connect with kids. Round 1, Pick 19 — Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia     •    JJ: Panthers were on the clock and submitted their pick almost immediately — a sign of confidence and preparation. Freeling is 6’7”, 320 lbs, played in the SEC in a pro-style system.     •    Luke: Loved the pick. Emphasized you can never have too many quality offensive linemen. Noted Freeling’s size, athleticism, and arm length as key traits. Said the pick also reflects team’s philosophy of drafting great people, not just great players.     •    JJ: Noted reporter Darren Gantt compared Freeling favorably to Jordan Gross — bigger, heavier, and faster — as a potential franchise left tackle.     •    Luke: Pointed out that young players like Freeling still have physical development ahead of them, comparing the trajectory to Christian McCaffrey’s growth from age 20 onward. Round 2, Pick 49 — Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech     •    JJ: Panthers traded up from 51 to 49 (pick swap with Minnesota) to grab Hunter. Played audio from Panthers area scout Kaden McLuhan, who scouted Hunter.     •    Scout Kaden McLuhan (audio): Said Hunter’s size is immediately striking, and that everyone around him spoke glowingly about his character, energy, and love for the game.     •    Luke: Praised Hunter as a massive (6’3”, 320 lbs, ~34” arms) two-gap nose tackle who fits perfectly in the Evero defense. Compared his prospect profile to Akiem Hicks. Said having Derek Brown, Bobby Brown, Derrick Brown, Terson Wharton, and now Hunter creates varied body types that stress offensive linemen.     •    JJ: Noted Hunter ranked third among all prospects in run-stuff rate and sixth in interior pass-rush win rate — addressing a perception that he couldn’t rush the passer. Rounds 3–7 Highlights     •    Luke: Highlighted WR Brazle (3rd round, 6’4”, 437 speed, 1,000+ yards at Tennessee) as the vertical threat the offense needed. Also praised OL Sam Heck (5th round) as a technically sound player whose “short arms” caused him to fall but who has proven himself.     •    Luke: Mentioned CB Will Lee (6’1”, 33” arms) fits the Panthers’ DB prototype — big, long corners.     •    Luke: Praised S/LB hybrid Zaki Wheatley (5th round, 6’3”) as a big nickel similar to Trayvon Merek.     •    Luke: Excited about the linebacker competition between Devin Lloyd, Trevvin Wallace, and Claudin Cherless.     •    JJ: Noted Panthers had the #1 “steal/overreach” rating in the entire draft — drafting players lower than consensus big boards projected. Around the League     •    Luke: Admitted being “a little jealous” that the Miami Dolphins drafted LB Jacob Rodriguez (Luke’s favorite LB in the draft). Has personal connections to Miami’s coaching staff (Jeff Hafley, DC Shawn Dugen — a childhood teammate).     •    Luke: Also noted Miami’s selection of OT/G Kaden Proctor out of Alabama, who will likely move to guard. League Trends — Bigger Tight Ends / 12 & 13 Personnel     •    JJ: Observed the NFL saw its highest run rate in ~11 years (~52%) and a notable pivot toward big blocking tight ends in this draft.     •    Luke: Explained the cyclical nature of NFL offense/defense evolution — as defenses get smaller to match spread offenses, teams counter with bigger personnel (12/13 formations), which then forces defenses to get bigger at the nickel/“big nickel” spot. Called it an ongoing arms race.
