Analysts Interpretations On Cam's Workout

Mayock had more points that posted in the original post. It isn't that Newton didn't play in a pro-style offense. It's that he didn't play in an offense that was that complicated and he wasn't asked to read coverage before the play but to react to it once the play starts.

There is also the fact that most college QBs will look good in a pair of gym shorts with no defense on the other side of the ball. The most impressive pro day in history was JaMarcus Russel's. Pro days mean very little.

Drafting players in the 1st round is all about drafting the player that is most likely to susceed. With little film on him, the offense he has played in and messurables we know, I think if any team has him as a 1st round pick that would be great for this kid. But what is out there does not equal a top ten pick.

If the Panthers were to be able to trade down into the 20's and pick Newton up I would be estatic. Or if another team falls in love with Newton to the point they will trade up to the #1 overall to get, even better for the Panthers. I wouldn't agree with the Panthers taking him #1 overall, but I would quickly become the biggest Newton fan if it did happen. Just like I did with Clausen and Edwards last year...

The thing that will make or break Cam is how he does in chalkboard/tape sessions with teams. If he can demonstrate even a basic understanding of offensive concepts, his draft stock will shoot way up.
wish we still had pie

Yeah, because heisman winning QB's don't have a basic understanding of offensive concepts? Just because he doesn't come from a pro-style offense doesn't mean he is a retarded robot that just runs around with the ball. On the other hand, I am not claiming that he can fully grasp a Pro Offense, but to question his understanding of basic offensive concepts (30 Passing TD's and 20 Rushing TD's last season) is a little ridiculous.

They are going to make damn sure he understands before giving him millions. That's one thing that makes or breaks a player.

I'm a fan of Newton too but he is a guy that you draft and let set behind a vet for a least two years. Are most Panther fans ready and willing to let Clausen play and lose for two years while Newton, the #1 overall, sits and learns? Because if Newton has to come in and play early on, he will fail and fail big. That's not a knock on him, he just won't be ready.

I don't think it will take him 2 years. I would say 1 year tops, and he could still probably make plays while he's learning. Anyway, I'm more than willing to wait a year, because the sky is the limit for this kid once he does figure it out. Then you're set for the next 10-12 years. To me, drafting a QB is all about the future anyway, not what he can do for you in the first year.

Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out where all of this "he has to play right away" crap came from in the first place. That kind of thinking has probably ruined more QB's than anything else.
