when was the last time it worked for a team that was in our current situation?

seriously think of an example of a team that had a horrible QB situation with a new head coach rebuild quickly by signing a vet at the same time as drafting a QB (in any round), sat that QB for two years while they made the playoffs with the vet they signed, and then enjoyed consistent success when their rookie QB was "groomed" enough to play up to an acceptable standard.

Does the rookies initials have to be CM and the draft happens on the 28th?

Your exact scenario doesn't happen often because the exact scenario we are in doesn't happen often.

Plenty of QBs have done well after sitting under a veteran.

Ok, the only situation I can find is the 1999 Vikings when they brought in Jeff George and drafted Dante Culpepper when they went 10-6 with George starting then 11-5 the next year with Culpepper starting. However, that was the only good year they had with a winning record while Culpepper was the QB even though he himself played relatively good there. Maybe if he had a better team around him, they would've had more success. According to his numbers though he had a bad next 2 years after his first year starting and then a good next 2 years and then fell off the face of the earth after Gamble ended him.

Anyway Philip Rivers probably qualifies

listen i don't want to be the asshole that says "no he doesn't" but no he doesn't

drew brees wasn't a vet and the Chargers drafted him relatively early, and no he wasn't that great before they drafted Rivers but he was world's better than what we have

and oh it's not that hard to find teams that were in our situation. the 2007 atlanta falcons were working with Joey Harrington

San Francisco Bil Walsh and Joe Montana

3 problems

Steve DeBerg had about as much on field pro experience by the time Walsh came in as Jimmy Clausen, he debuted in SF, like Jimmy Clausen debuted here, and Bill's 49ers were poo the two years before Montana truly took the reigns in 81.

so then if we have to go back more than ten years just to find an example that meets it most of the way, why are people acting like this plan is so chic and bulletproof like everybody's been doing it to rebuild a franchise with no QB since the dawn of the NFL? Like there's such overwhelming evidence that has proven this is the way to go if you're trying to win immediately and in the future...

      Dude, I think I might be having Jarvy withdrawals... I ripped the sleeves off of all of my t-shirts in my sleep last night. Every bite of my Alpha-Bita cereal spelled Seth, this morning. And, I took 7 naps before lunch. I'm losing it guys! Jarvy's Jaunty Band of Jaggoffs are getting more play than he is... smh Team Canada doesn't treasure Jarvis the way he deserves. He should take his band down to Liechtenstein, get a bag of passports, and start his own Olympic team! The raw animal magnetism of Jarvilicious will bring in a handful of NHLers on its own. And, since the IOC believes in collective punishment, he could have his pick of the rookies. Then, just fill out the rest of the roster with the maple blooded great white northerners who couldn't make the top squad. Can't trust this assembled awesomery to just any old Liechtensteinien with a clipboard and a whistle. Gotta bring in a legend worthy of this gold medal gambit. A hockey HOFer with the balls to buck the system and the aura to match our maverick. Huere geil, Vaduz!!! 2030 Gold Medal guaranteed!

      Tennessee isn't trading a QB on a 2nd round contract that has starting experience.  That's bad business.

      OT is the top priority as it is both an immediate and future need.  I wouldn't be past trading up slightly to get the guy we want.  You need that rookie contract right now.  Icky is a dead 17.5 million for the season.  Morton is 20+ mil for the season, Hunt is 20+ mil for the season.  There needs to be forward thinking regarding the future.   Caleb Lomu is a left Tackle, he's a solid prospect, he may be the best pick for us now and in the future.  I would seriously consider cutting Hunt after 2026, and let Lomu and Icky fight for the LT job, loser moves inside.  Icky's future may be at guard after this injury anyway.  If Damien Lewis keeps up his level of play he will need to be paid sooner rather than later.  Yosh and BC can be our top two depth OL at an affordable price.  You will need to look at OT again in 2027. Getting an EDGE for the sake of getting an EDGE outside of the top 10 is pretty risky.  I wouldn't be against eyeing someone like Cashius Howell, Derrick Moore, or TJ Parker in the 2nd (even if we trade a future pick to move up) or DDS in the third. I'd love to see us try to sign both Leo Chenal and Matt Millano in FA.   Chenal for the blitzing element we are missing from our LB corps and Millano for his elite coverage.  They could both work in tandem.  Remember, our FO has deep ties to both KC and Buffalo. I love thinking about the draft, but until Free Agency hits, we are clueless.  Looking at the strength of FA and the draft, OL is priority #1, LB #2, and EDGE #3.  We know what happens to Bryce when protection falls apart.
