TC Check in: Winners and Losers

I remember last season wondering how Moore made it over Smith Marsette but in the final Qtr of games I understood.

Him and Bryce have a nice chemistry and he's an extremely reliable option for the just in case. We'll carry 7 WR's on the 53, I'd put money on it. That said, Coker is most likely safe imo.

I don't know.  I think we are way too run dependent to just be carrying 2 TEs into a season.  Think that's just too light in the run game.

and we just don't run the type O IMO to need 7 WRs.

canales runs plenty of 3/4 WR formations

they'll most likely keep two TE's on practice squad while tremble is on PUP and use a PS elevation each week for the 3rd TE on game days. they did that all last season when Tremble and Ian Thomas were on IR, they just brought Jordan Matthews on the game day roster with PS elevations

they'll also use a 6th O-linemen with Brady Christensen or chandler zavala for run game

So, it has come up that this board is t as active as it used to be and that media coverage isn’t what it used to be. I for one have been disappointed by coverage of training camp. (And before some jag off tells me to get on TikTok, let me tell you: I am on TikTok and the fact that you think that constitutes coverage shows you how impoverished we are when it comes to training camp coverage) Anywho, thought I’d try to generate some questions I have been interested in. No ground breaking insights from me but curious to hear what others think.

WINNERS

Hunter Renfrow- sounds like he was expected to be on the bubble and looks like he has defied expectations to be at the top of the group. Almost certain he makes the team. Might be the number three receiver.

Jimmy Horn- drafted late and seemed like he was the type of player we would sign to PS. Now it seems like he is on the inside with reliably solid play, likely contributor on special teams, and as-advertised speed.

Turk Wharton: everything I hear about him is that he has exceeded expectations. Sounds like with Brown and Robinson being held out, he has run with the ones and performed well. I was particularly glad to hear he did well in run support as I thought he was brought in more as a pass rusher.

Bryce Young- looks like he is going to continue his trajectory of modest improvement. The real reason he makes the list is that it seems we have gotten a pretty significant upgrade at the wr and rb  positions with the above players looking promising he looks to have a decent jump in production.

LOSERS

ryan Fitzgerald - seems like the job was wide open and he has not taken advantage of the opportunity.

jalen Coker - with Jimmy horn snd Renfrow standing out, I think his role may be in jeopardy. I thought he would for sure be a big part of the offense after last year but as I pick our top six wr, he is looking like he is on the bubble more than I thought he’d be. Suddenly I think the wr is a bit crowded.

Nic scourton- being purposely harsh a bit but I think our EDGE situation is a bit crowded with wonnum, jones, and prince. I think they lean towards the vets to start and I’ve heard highlights from Prince. Again, way to early, I was just hoping to hear more about him standing out and I’ve heard nothing. It’s also a little crowded.

Fans- Training Camp just isn’t what it used to be. Less reporting, less access, less enthusiasm.all evidenced by me starting this topic instead of someone who knows what they are talking about.

WANT TO HEAR MORE FROM

honestly scourton and Coker should really be here for me. Want to generally hear more about our young guys. These two in particular

Pat Jones- one of our bigger signings. Has promise but heard nothing. Really interested in how edge plays out as we’ve invested a lot there and have, in my view four potential starters for two spots. Wondering how the snaps get shared.

Ransom-was high on him when we drafted him. Safety is a big need so I’m excited to see how it shakes out.

what do you think? Who has helped themselves? Hurt themselves? You’d like to hear more about? Sorry you are hearing from me and not someone better, but it’s been quiet so thought I’d float this out to see what others thought

7 years ago of losing, getting our poo kicked in, and Tepper…. Will do it with low board activity.

Btw Hunter could be a dark horse comeback player of the year

    • I encourage you to go back and watch his college play. Notice how he immediately backpedals to 10 yards behind the LOS on almost every snap. You can't do that in the NFL. Your OTs have no chance of keeping those freak show edge rushers off of you. You can't create a pocket that deep. If you drop back like that in the NFL on a regular basis you're basically on your own. Your OL can't do a whole lot for you. Bryce can chuck it when he has an airport runway in front of him to step up into. There's a reason why "ease of generating velocity" is such a talking point evaluating QBs. It's not how hard or how far you can throw the ball given a perfect situation. It's how hard and how far you can throw the ball in a typical NFL game situation and that's where a lot of my concerns with Bryce were going into the draft. There were way too many plays in his college tape that if you were watching that purely in terms of translating it to the NFL it just didn't work.
    • Yeah, like I said I get it. From a revenue perspective I'm not a good customer for them. They've probably intentionally tanked offline franchise mode to try to get people online. Again, not a terrible strategy from a pure business perspective. I can't really be mad at them for doing what's good for business but yeah, from my perspective it still sucks.
    • Ok let me be more specific. Smith was a stud before Newton got here do you not agree? Yes, LaFell improved under Cam but then had his best years after leaving the Panthers with Cam as the QB and going to NE. So he improved playing with someone else. Olsen was in Chicage the year before Cam arrived and statistically had the same numbers his first year with Cam.  Hope that's clearer for you.
