The problem is if he leaves, all of the Bryce fanboys will use it as an excuse for any regression or lack of progress that Bryce shows. Despite having an expensive OL and 2 first round picks at WR. I really would like to see the real Bryce this year before the 5th year option next spring.

The problem with this thought process that assumes the WRs taken in the 1st round are actually 1st round talents. People like you have made such a big deal about Bryce being bad in his first 2 seasons and gave the excuse he had "enough" talent around him to be a good player. Here is the talent that was around him

From NAS's thread

First two years

DJ Chark: free agent
Hayden Hurst: free agent
Diontae Johnson: free agent
Terrace Marshall, Jr.: free agent
Jonathan Mingo: traded
Miles Sanders: released
Laviska Shenault: free agent

Why do you expect our young QB to have thrived with the likes of the above list if 31 other NFL teams choose to not surround their QBs with these players? Tmac is probably going to be a good WR. Is it a surefire thing? No it isn't. Same with XL. How many drops did this 1st round pick you are propping up on a pedestal have his rookie year? You want Bryce to throw it to him AND catch it for him? Sounds like unrealistic expectations if you ask me.

All that aside it is put up or shut up time for this offense though. But just because we invested heavily in 1st round WRs doesn't mean they will automatically be good. With or without Bryce.

    • Then why are they paying QBs so much compared to other players? QB are making so much it's harder and harder to pay other players. If a guy plays like 1 of 11 then there pay should be in line with that. Not all QB should be breaking the bank just because your next or a former 1st rounder There is a reason they say try to win it all on a QB rookie deal because after that they can cripple a team on what it can do. I would rather not do that for a bottom 1/3 QB. Cam and Jake have been the only QBs worth investing long term into this team has had I would rather not lower the bar. If a guy don't got the IT factor and it shows I would rather not invest long term into them and keep looking
    • Aho…come out and prove me wrong boy.
    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
