Panthers Bringing in Newton for Visit

I'm an ACC guy so I use a lot of basketball analogies so I am sorry in advance,

Len Bias and Ralph Sampson's best seasons statistically dwarfed Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner's, and Tyler Hanbrough's best seasons. But when people talk about the best player in ACC basketball history, why do Michael, Tyler, David Thompson, and Christian's names come up first???

no, what he was meaing was that although BB was the coach and he views cam as one way. his qb views him another way. and basically you can be a winner on the stats page, but if you cant win the big one who gives a fug about you.

What are you talking about? He said guys are judged on championships. According to that logic, Dilfer is better than Marino

I saw the NFL Network interview of Ron Rivera, and he's either doing a hell of an acting job, or he is seriously considering Newton.

And FTR, Kalil said that he liked Newton too. Somebody needs to ask Smitty, Gettis, and LaFell. I would be very interested to hear their opinions.

I can go ahead an tell you Smith is happy with anyone that will not check down and get him the damn ball. IMO if you double Smith you leave a big damn gap open for Newton to burn you for 10 to 15 yards.

Now does that guarantee success at the next level? Of course not but neither does what Luck did at Stanford and yet he is hyped as the best qb in decades. The bottom line to me is he brings to the table the 3 things I want in a franchise QB.

It's not what Luck did at Stanford stats wise but what he showed that will transfer to the NFL level. How do you not understand this?

You must be referring to the Arkansas game when they didn't put a defense on the field. And yeah he did pick up the slack.

Good thing his defense and running back showed up in the national championship game because those errant throws, pick, and late fumble would have been costly if he was the only player on the team. I mean Fairley sure didn't do anything to disrupt Oregon's offense and the running back going for 100+ was no help either. Bums.

Actually I do understand that. How do you not understand that no player is a sure thing making the transition from college to NFL and that includes the almighty Luck?

To be clear I was thrilled with the possibility of getting Luck but the way people talk its like the guy could walk on water.

Haha you act like I wanted Luck. I was the one saying he's only getting hyped that much because every other QB coming out was terrible and the gap between them made Luck look much better than I think he is. He's still a far better prospect compared to Cam and Blaine but he's no sure thing.

Yeah his 320+ yard 2 touchdown 60% completion performance that was his worst game of the second half of the season was a real stinker.

And I'm not taking anything away from the rest of the team. They all deserve credit. But don't act like the Heisman Trophy winner and a guy who had two td's was just carried by their dominate defense as if Auburn won in spite of Cam.

Who do you wan to QB this team going into the future?? Just curious.

Not getting into the argument, but can't really judge based on championships. It's a team game, Cam didn't win by himself.

Honestly, I'm surprised anyone uses the whole "national championship/Heisman trophy" thing as an argument.

If you take a look at the names of the guys that have done those things over the past 10-20 years, you'll see the vast majority of them did nothing in the NFL (if they even made it).

Folks arguing those things as if they meant something make me chuckle.

    • Call me crazy but if you’re in the bottom 7 in efficiency using Zone 84% of the time why not try something else? You paid Jaycee top 5 CB money use him more effectively. Zone is only efficient if you can generate a good pass rush to force a QB into mistakes otherwise you will get picked apart
    • Good Lord this board has become a cesspool of negativity and where fandom becomes something twisted and unrecognizable.
    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
