For me, it depends more on the role than the actor. For example, I am not a big fan of Cruise, but he was really good in Jerry Maguire and Valkryie. Russel Crowe in Gladiator, 3:10 to Yuma, Robinhood, Beautiful Mind and especially Master and Commander was excellent. And I like several of Tom Hanks movies.

i thought cruise was great in Collateral.

Leo is the new Cruise to me in the sense of the intensity he brings to every film. Ever since the jumping couch scene on Oprah Cruise hasn't been the same.

I agree on Colateral. I'm a huge Michael Mann fan as well so that helped.
