How would YOU predict a QB's success?

Intellect

Wisdom

Drive.

Let me 'splain.

Intellect: ability to see changes in the game. Not just from college to pro, but year to year in the pros.

Wisdom: The ability to recognize one's shortcomings.

Drive: the ability to take criticism & make yourself better

Valid? yeah.

Measurable? Not really.

But as I mentioned in the other thread, stats and math only tell you so much.

I tend to look at a guy's throwing motion/release, his mid-range accuracy, and pocket presence. Mentally, I look for someone who is confident in his abilities and has that "it" factor about them.

Now, this "it" factor isn't always easy to pinpoint; some guys have it in different ways. I think Cam Newton has it, but you know what? Jake Delhomme also had it during his prime years. Two completely different players, but both with the "it" factor (IMO with Newton) in their own way.

Well the intellect part is measurable. In general & in football the other two though, yeah you have to trust your sources & judgement.

Definitely not an exact science.

Some guys are good at it and some just aren't.

Yup. & even the guys who do it fug up... & then the guys who complain the most don't have 1/4 the info of the guys who do it for a living...

Bobby Beathard is in the discussion for most successful general managers of all time, but most people these days just remember him as the guy who drafted Ryan Leaf (if they remember him at all).

To put it in Biblical terms,"there is none perfect; no not one" :sosp:

Personally I put a lot more weight into the mental side of things than the physical side. The physical side of things can be taught if you have the right attitude and mental abilities but you can't teach an idiot how to read a defense. An average athlete that works hard will be better than a brilliant athlete that doesn't work hard.

I want my QB to be a hard worker, I want him trying to make himself a better player and to study the opposition obsessively. Basically the way I would predict how good a QB is by interviewing them extensively. Something none of us here get the chance to do so we will never come up with a definitive formula for drafting QB'.s

I know this won't be popular to say, but Real Deal has it right when he talks about looking for skills that translate into the NFL. That's a pretty good indicator.

.

I think this is the underlying assumption with all of the attributes you look for. In other words, I would not call it an indicator, I would call it the objective.
