Yas: Why the Carolina Panthers are relevant

I was driving Sunday and listening to Sirius NFL Radio when I heard something that really bothered me.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has a leading role in the NFL labor negotiations.

Alex Marvez and Zig Fracassi were hosting the show and, as always, doing a fine job. But it was one of their callers that really struck a nerve with me.

“Who is Jerry Richardson?’’ the caller said.

It didn’t take much to factor in tone and the rest of what he had to say to figure out he was saying something like, “Why is this nobody from Mayberry running the labor negotiations?’’

The caller went on to say the Carolina Panthers, the team Richardson owns, isn’t relevant. Then, he dropped the bomb that I thought was totally unfair and out of bounds.

“If the Carolina Panthers ever got into the Super Bowl, how many people would really care about (Richardson’s) team? Maybe 10,000,’’ he said.

The Panthers only super bowl is widely regarded as one of the best super bowls of all time

I hate dumbass fans who know nothing about football.

This place must drive you crazy.

Eh....it doesn't really bother me. I can't get upset by every dumbass on earth.

...and all the fans of these other teams refuse to acknowledge that JR is doing what's he's doing in the Labor negotiations because the owner of their team appointed him to do it.

The instant their owners didn't approve of the way JR was doing things they could pull the plug on him, so what does that tell you?

They appointed JR because they knew he was one of the few owners that had the balls to stare Peyton Manning and Drew Brees down and be the "bad guy".

    • The team with the smallest starting qb in the league just lost its LT.
    • I don’t know what the team is thinking but I tend to agree on LOT. I have said before that it pushes the upgrades we hoped to make all down a rung on the priority ladder.    It feels like… you have this great vacation planned and right before you are about to go, you lose your job. You still gonna take that vacation or are you going to pay bills?
    • I think the Bevell hire has more to do with adding actual veteran head coaching experience to the staff than anything else. But I do wholeheartedly agree that the obsession in general with Seattle needs to come to an end. I mean we plucked the one guy there to be our GM who turned out to be our worst GM in franchise history in just a few short years and that's really saying something given our history there. Clearly trying to mimick Seattle in any way has not been productive. As far as Idzik many of us have asked the same question but at this point in time it doesn't really matter anymore because Canales is either going to lead this franchise to a winning record or he will be shown the door.
