Dan Connor?

Think outside the box... given that everyone thinks Connor can play better than Diggs in the future, would anyone think outside the box and move Beason to OLB and put Connor at MLB?

I was thinking the same thing. Beason is a top middle linebacker though, so it would be tough to see him move to the outside, however I have no doubt he would be unstoppable on the outside. The only question is, would Dan Connor be a big drop off at the middle spot. Connor was critiqued for his coverage skills, but if he were in the middle it would give him a chance to play the run. With beason and davis on the outside taking away the short passes and bringing unmatched speed not seen at the outside linebacker position in today's nfl. Beason and Davis would be an offensive coordinator's nightmare if they both were alternatively blitzing.

I see absolutely no problem with having a good backup for our star middle linebacker... we were lucky with injuries this year and didn't have to utilize as many backups as a lot of teams. We won't always be the frortunate. I think Connor was a good pick and will prove his worth in the coming seasons.

of course we dont..but this guy we projected to be a 1-2nd rounder a instant starter in a 3-4 and we come along and take him to be a back up.....all that does is make him angry and want out and become a locker room cancer because he wants to start....adam 2.0

Yeah, it seems that people have forgotten how many times the Panthers had to play a back up at MLB over the last 5-6 years. Having good depth is never a bad thing, and I'm not so sure Conner can't play on the outside anyway.

yea, they were backing up Dan "Mr. IR" Morgan afterall.

Don't forget that Thomas Davis' contract will be up at the end of next season. We could potentially let him walk. Connor was projected to be an above average starter at weakside and middle linebacker. I think if Connor proves he can handle it, he just may be taking Davis' job in a year.

I have a friend who's last name is Connor and everybody spells his name Conner. We have a linebacker named Conner and everybody seems to want to spell his name Connor. Just amuses me, that's all...

Thinking of moving Beason outside does intrigue me somewhat. I know he started on the outside and was pretty pedestrian until he was moved inside when Morgan was hurt, but that was early in his career when he was just picking up the NFL and he might excel on the outside now as well. This would allow us to use Conner at his best. Not saying it is the way to go, just that it intrigues me.

IMHO, you gotta keep Davis next year. He just seems to improve every year...

great point, i was thinking the same myself, seeing him play in college I always thought he would develop well in the NFL, I thought he played kinda like Dan Morgan but with better pass coverage skills.

connor isn't anywhere close to davis in athletic ability, I don't think he would handle the outside very well at all, he just doesn't have the physical traits you would want in a 4-3, it would be all he could do just to keep up

that's my only knock on him though, he has alot of good qualities and could become a contributor in certain situations but i don't see him as a starter

He won't take Diggs spot as a "rookie". He needs time under his belt since all he's really had is preseason work. Not everyone can make an impact Day One like Beason.

why not? they didn't draft him to be a backup......Beason wasn't in another "league" when he came into Carolina in comparison to Connor. In all honesty I would be surprised if we saw Beason move to another spot and allow Connor to take over the MLB spot. Most would think that is crazy but crazy is not having your best talent on the field and Beason is fast enough and can cover well enough to move........but we have to see if Connor can live up to his hype though.

We originally drafted him just because of his value, he was too good to pass up in the 3rd round even though we didn't need him, so he's going to be a back up for some time now

Just becuase he was drafted for "value", doesn't mean he won't start sooner, rather than later. Players aren't drafted in Round 3 to sit the bench. Case in point...Ryan Kalil. Second round pick who was drafted for value. Now, in his second season, the starting center for your Carolina Panthers.

I also dont buy the idea that Beason can't simply move outside. You can be an outside linebacker, and still lead the defense. Think Derrick Brooks. Brooks has played both in his career, and I can assure you, the guys in the huddle could give a sh*t whether his alphabet soup said MLB or OLB on the depth chart.
