The Panthers have reportedly made "significant progress" with free agent Jordan Gross

just as a note, progress has been made, no contract has been signed yet, and it seems a few are forgetting this fact, and as the saying goes "it ain't over till it's over and it ain't over yet".

Honestly anybody who expects this to get done more than a day or two before the deadline doesn't know the business. Gross already had a ton of leverage, but with Pep and his agents stupid ass public comments Gross is in total control now. Why would he sign any sooner than the day of the deadline, the only thing that will happen is his deal will increase, of course he is gonna wait until the last minute. At this point, he knows he will be franchised if he doesn't sign, so he is gonna milk it for all he can(and who can blame him). Deal will be signed sometime Thursday, unless there is some BIG issue, this is how it will go down.

Well if Gross is on our side then I disagree with you. The fact that $9 mil a year has already been thrown out there, it seems apparent that Gross is trying to do the Panthers a favor. The contract will be signed by Wed at the latest

you left out the last sentence of the rotoworld entry...

according to the entry before this one, the panthers haven't even bothered to talk to peppers.

imo, it looks like they would let peppers walk before losing gross.

Why would they bother to talk with Peppers?? He didn't talk with the Panthers before proclaiming he wants out. Here's the conversation ...

Hurney - Hey J-Pepp. Have you enjoyed the offseason? How was Hawaii.

Pepp - Ummm good.

Hurney - By the way, we're planning to use the franchise tag on you so we can get compensation when you leave.

Pepp - Ummm good. Call my agent.

Hurney - OK, we'll call you once we know something.

Pepp - Ummm good.

The Panthers will deal with Pepp through his agent. It probably won't be until the tag is applied and they begin looking at trade options. The Panthers will make every effort to get the deal done with Gross but either way, Pepp is getting the tag. Don't be surprised if an agreement is reached with Gross on Thursday but the ink isn't dry until Friday or later.

as for the thread's title. Gantt's posted about it in his blog. League sources have confirmed that major ground was covered today in talks between Gross and the Panthers. He talks about NFL.com reporting, but sources have confirmed the story.

Some people just bitch about things to bitch about things....look at the first comment on the article.

^^^^

Are you talking about the comment on Gantt's blog? That comment is tool worthy for sure. Some of the ones on Schefter's are too, that's why I wasn't sure which you meant.

Great news if it goes through.

I don't get it? Signing Gross is one of the Panthers biggest problems to take care of, why shouldn't Gantt say it?

    • TBH, these are the kind of players that get weeded out of professional sports pretty quickly. Also, CMC is not that guy. There is zero indication that he isn't competitive.
    • I like the free agency. It actually helps basically all schools across the board. Pretty much only ancient HC's and/or HC's that haven't been able to adjust have been complaining about the free agency. Your fortunes can be made or broken every offseason. It's not like before where a bad recruiting class or two meant multiyear purgatory.  I will never understand all the bellyaching about the NIL. If you want to talk about what ruined college athletics, it has been naked greed. Conference expansions for TV revenue, ever skyrocketing AD and facilities costs and now the attempts to permanently ruin the postseasons(football and basketball).  All the kids did was get a very well deserved piece of a very, very, VERY broken pie.
    • Nobody is saying they don't count against the cap, because yes, they technically do count against the cap as it's money the team is paying and it needs to be accounted for. But what you're not grasping it seems is that if a player gets $10 million guaranteed in their contract, whether they get literally $0 as a signing bonus or $8 million as a signing bonus, it doesn't change the overall cap hit of the contract, because cap hits are about the guaranteed money, not how much is paid up front. The only thing that how much is paid up front changes, is how the cap hit can be spread out amongst the years. So yes, technically there could end up being a slightly bigger cap hit in year 3 and 4 due to a bigger signing bonus, but if that is the case, it also means there will be a lesser cap hit in years 1 and 2 than there would have been with a smaller bonus.  But over the length of the contract, the size of the signing bonus has literally zero affect on the overall cap hit of the contract, because THAT part of it is 100% about the guaranteed money and nothing else.
