If you knew Newton would hit his upside

If he does produce those kind of numbers, don't you think that would become the new standard? The things you look for in a quarterback would change. The mold wouldn't be 6'3 230 pocket passer with a great arm. Eventually everyone would have a quarterback with more ability than being just a gun slinger. Thus changing the way the qb position is played.

The game is already changing, defenses are forcing offenses to get mobile QBs. And Vick rushed for 1000 yards and threw for 2500. That didn't become the new standard.

would you prefer him over Luck?

I don't really see his "great upside" that everyone is talking about.

He is a great athlete playing QB. He is supposed to change the position.....just like all of the other great athletes before him.

Problem is that none of those great athletes ever turned out to be great QB's.

Vick ONLY became a top QB once he learned to be a passer....rather than a running athlete playing QB.

Vick was a great QB in Atlanta. Anyone who says otherwise go back and watch his games agaonst the Panthers when we could rarely beat him. Also his Pro Bowls and nearly winning an MVP award was pretty special as well.

I Cam is "only" as good as Vick in ATL we need to go ahead and announce we are selecting him.

Vick was not a great QB in Atlanta. His completion % was bad and he made most of his plays with his legs.

I want a QB who makes the passing game a major weapon. Not one who is a third RB in the backfield.

He is bigger and stronger than most running backs. He will be fine he isn't small like Vick and Vick stays relatively (he does get dinged up) healthy but Vick doesn't have to build or strength of a Cam Newton.

And if he runs for 1000 yards and wins us 2 super bowls you won't care whether he was a QB ir a RB.

First off Teeray, I like debating with you. Can't say I ever really noticed you before today but it's been great and civil which is great.

Ok, one thing Newton will have to worry about is his height as it concerns running. Most running backs, even tall ones like AP, have short legs. Longer legs have a tendency to have more tears and sprains to the MCL, ACL and PCL. Culpepper is a great example of a running QB having a lot of problems with his leg/knee on the field. (Note these injuries are not coming in the weight room.) So while Vick is smaller, his low center of gravity may have helped in keeping him healthy.

I live outside of Pittsburgh and I can tell you there are a lot of Steeler fans that while they love Ben running during the game as it helps in getting wins. Those same fans bash him and worry endlessly about him hurting his knee and they reference Culpepper a lot in those conversations.

Exactly people kill me with that "vick only was good in Philly" nonsense smh with better coaching and a mentor in McNabb he became more balanced but he was always a beast.

Vick was a beast running the ball.

It was proven time and time again that the way to beat Atlanta during the Vick years was to keep him in the pocket and force him to be a passing QB.

When he was, he was a below average QB.

Because they haven't won anything. If Vick suddenly rushed for 1000 and passed for 3000 and won the superbowl all in the same year the impact would be huge. Granted athletes with the ability to duplicate what Vick and newton can do would be rare.

I think that's why everyone talks about this tremendous potential. The ability to do these things can't be found year to year in the draft. It takes a special blend, a hybrid so to speak. Cam is a special talent. A once in a decade player. Size, speed, power and a cannon.

The last time unlimited potential was thrown around was Vick in 01. As Jim harbaugh has said, newton is raw but plutonium grade potential. I like to think that's rare with ability to transcend the game.

Imagine him with passing skill in a vertical offense. That's Newton's upside.

But teams are already looking to get mobile QBs due to defenses getting faster. So regardless if Vick wins the superbowl or Newton busts, teams will need mobile QBs either way IMO. So Cam won't change the game.

If we're going to go fantasy world where both guys would become elite passers a better comparison question would be Newton or Locker since they both have the same ability with their legs. Of course this is real life not fantasy world so I would take Luck 1000 out of 1000 times....

Yeah. I made this point earlier chef. That is why I said the position was changing regardless of Cam. But Cam could speed up the process.

Are you saying locker and newton have the same potential? Luck is great and no one will be asgood as hes going to be yea we know.

Like I said if both are going to develop into elite passers which is what you implied then yes, Locker has the same ability to be a dangerous dual threat QB that Cam does. Is it really that hard to understand....

    • Miami plays Cleveland and Atlanta has Boston.
    • There is a possibility that however people were measured it differs from what is being done elsewhere.  There were apparently a number of prospects that disagreed with their measurements at the combine... Maybe I just missed it but I'd never heard of this level of it before.
    • https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp Going by this chart that won’t get it done, at all.  both of our 5th rounders are worth 56, total.    The 51st is valued at 390. Moving to 41 takes 100 points. In the second where we are, it is basically 10 points per slot. You can get in front of TB for 60 points. Baltimore at 45.  Which who would do that for 56 points? You are on a wing and a prayer.    To realistically have a good shot at these top guys, outside of Golday, it is gonna take at least 100 points, I am thinking.  And when they go, Golday’s market probably gets a lot hotter.  Just going by the rankings/valuations, I am thinking if you realistically want to assure you get your guy it will take trading back in the first. Which is why I have been saying to do that if we can.  For example 19 is valued at 875. 21 is 800. That, plus one of the 5ths gets you to 100 points which you theoretically could use to get to 41.    I think there are going to be several good options for us at 19, if we are good with taking what is left at 21-23 we can get a good player plus fund a trade up for one of these LBs which is what I am thinking makes sense.
